Pendant lights are a great alternative to traditional lighting fixtures, especially when they combine style and functionality. Add to your home’s atmosphere by complementing the decor, or choose a statement piece that will be sure to impress.

You can take your pick today when it comes to pendant lights – from stunning glass forms, to bold metal fixtures and everything in between. With so much to choose from, here are five designs that can be enjoyed both day and night.

Elegance and simplicity combine in this pendant lamp created by Norwegian duo Morten and Jonas from the design studio of the same name.

Made from powder coated steel tube and available in warm beige, black matte and white matte, it is perfect for adding a pool of warm light over a dining table or kitchen island.

Outside of the living spaces, make it a focal point that lines a dark hallway or entrance – practical and beautiful.

Inspired by New Zealand’s native tūī, this pendant light by David Trubridge brings the outdoors in – both through the design and material.

The interwoven rings mimic those found on the tūī’s shoulders. Each half ring is made from bamboo and allows light to shine through while also highlighting the texture of the wood. During the day, the pendant is just as eye-catching with the repetition of pattern.

Brass mesh makes this pendant striking whether it is on or off, doubling as both a light and an art piece.

Known for shaping sculptures out of steel mesh with her hands, Johanna Forsberg artfully crafted the Heat lamp to create a glowing cloud around the bulb – diffusing warm light in a similar manner to sunlight and firelight.

A warm, welcoming feature for any living room – offering a radiance that can inspire imagination and creativity.

Part of Nightwork Studio’s Code Lighting System Pendant Collection, the Code Delta Kilo Pendant Light comprises solid brass and handblown glass.

The collection was developed over several years with each pendant featuring an innovative system of modular components that are connected and powered through a simple screw-together mechanism.

This modular system creates compositions reminiscent of the dots and dashes of Morse code, which the collection is also named after. The handblown glass creates a subtle glow, perfect for gently illuminating an otherwise dark corner.

The Bolle 6 Bubble Pendant features a suspended brass bulb that is surrounded by translucent glass spheres. From ECC Architectural, it is the work of Anglo-Italian team Giapato & Coombes and is inspired by the lightness of soap bubbles as a metaphor for the immateriality of light.

When switched on and off, the glass globes of this design reflect the surrounding environment and allow the light to dance around – amplifying the 'magical' effect inspired by bubbles.

Pendant lights can be eye-catching or understated pieces in your home that complement the mood. Either way, they bring function through design to any space. From a classic tube fixture that illuminates a kitchen workspace, to an intricately detailed pendant that is a showstopper day and night, there are plenty of options available.
