Cape to Bluff stands apart as an architectural book that deeply understands place. First published in 2021, Simon Devitt’s photographic journey from Cape Reinga to Bluff offered a deeply observed portrait of New Zealand architecture, seen through homes shaped by land, weather, memory and the lives lived within them. Now, Cape to Bluff Vol. 2 continues that journey.

Created over several years by photographer Simon Devitt and writer Andrea Stevens, the new volume features 30 homes from across Aotearoa, bringing together photography, essays and conversations that explore the relationship between architecture and place.

Rather than simply documenting built form, the book looks to the wider context that gives each home its meaning: the landscapes that hold it, the stories that informed it, and the everyday rituals that unfold within it.

Among the homes featured are a number connected to ArchiPro’s wider community of architects and designers.

Readers can explore The Fold House by Bossley Architects, a generous seaside residence defined by its folded roof planes and encampment-like composition, and Kaka Pod by Rafe Maclean Architects, a compact Wānaka holiday home that hovers quietly among the trees.

The book also features work by several ArchiPro-listed practices, including Chris Tate, whose Phia Bunker is included in the volume; Dalman Architects, with Tekapo; and Makers of Architecture, with The Crescent. Together, these projects reflect the breadth of residential architecture in Aotearoa. From remote retreats and coastal houses to homes shaped by highly specific sites, outlooks and ways of living.

With book design by Luke Scott and Sarah Gladwell, Cape to Bluff Vol. 2 builds on the spirit of the first edition while expanding its field of view. It is at once an architectural record, a cultural object and a love letter to the particularity of living in Aotearoa.

The book was launched in Auckland at Vidaspace in June, with other celebrations at Objectspace and in Wellington, marking the release of a publication that continues to champion architectural storytelling in New Zealand.
