25th May 2024, You excel as a human on the other side of fear. I drew these sculptures in my journal around 12 months ago with wide eyes, playing around with ideas of where I wanted to start exploring with my practice.

There wasn’t much of me that thought I’d ever have the opportunity to bring them to life, let alone only a month or so later be pitching the idea to a potential client. Well, that potential client became a client and with only the one meeting, a mere couple of weeks later I have an email that read “approved and the deposit has been paid”. When someone else’s money enters your account and you’re now responsible for delivering sculptures you’ve only dreamt of making before, which are currently only just a sketch on a piece of paper which will be turned into a feature out the front of a brand-new build in one of the most pristine parts of Sydney… I honestly giggled. But a giggle of… this is exactly what I’m meant to be doing and everything I’ve done before me has led to this point.

But, as it’s time to start sourcing stone, materials and ways to make them structurally sound, the doubts, the worries and the fear kicks in.

I quickly learnt that pitching an idea is the easy part, producing the finished product is another story. Many times, did I get to the studio and just sit, sit in contemplation for hours about many factors.

Fear of failure entered the conversation with myself plenty of times over the six-month project, I put so much pressure on myself to produce for my client. The night before installation day I slept hazy, knowing that these sculptures I hand crafted for months were about to be loaded up in separate pieces and craned 14m into position and with every bit of precision the holes I drilled were bang on and the steel bars would fit nicely.

One by one but not without a few stressful moments the sculptures were installed! You excel as a human on the other side of fear, a moment I was so proud of, the doubtful thoughts seemed like they were years ago, through-out this process there was a sense of calm deep within me that I kept tapping into to, almost like I knew I was being tested as the lessons I would learn along the way would be invaluable, and that they are.

I’d like to thank my client for trusting me and giving me this amazing opportunity to create, for this creative project I’m now a better person and at a stage with my practise which I’m extremely excited about.
