Having a designated office space in your home is a necessity, whether it be for running a business or just simply somewhere to pay bills and organise your time.

No matter what space you have to work with, creating an organised and charming home office can be affordable and fun.

Here are some tips on how to create a stylish but practical work space where you will be motivated, and possibly enjoy burning that ‘midnight oil’ a little more.

Location, Location, Location

Maybe you are lucky enough to already have an office in your home?  But if not, you could consider an unused nook or closet space (with or without doors removed) to transform into your work space?

That ever-so rarely used guestroom which has become a dumping ground for laundry and clutter – clear it out and make it into your dream office.

Think furniture

Now you have defined your space, the next most important item is your desk.  This will give you a starting point for creating the remainder of the room.  Your home office furniture should complement and blend in with the style of your house.  Look for something that is beautiful but also functional.

If you can’t find something you like, maybe consider up-cycling an old piece of furniture or paint a basic desk in an inspiring colour.

Investing in a great chair that is comfortable, beautiful and ergonomically-correct is important, especially if you spend hours at a time working at your desk.

Positioning your desk, storage and shelves in a way that will work well for your needs.

Give yourself a view

If you are lucky enough to have a window in your home office, then position your desk where you can enjoy the natural light and look outside.

For a windowless space, paint the walls a colour that will keep you productive and happy…. For some this may be a bright and cheery colour like orange, but for others maybe something a bit more subdued like soft blues or greens. Also, hang a nice piece of artwork above your desk for something to look at.

Organise

The organisation is key to a successful and productive workspace.  Using bookshelves and storage boxes keeps things neat and tidy and easily accessible.

Keep your desk clutter-free by using in-trays and magazine holders for those important files and documents.  Give that unused lovely old mug a new purpose as a pen holder or utilise those cute bowls to stash your paperclips and staples.

Decorate

A beautiful and organised workspace aids productivity and creativity.  Decorate your space in a way that will inspire and motivate you.  Place a few cherished pieces on your desk, such as a special photo, your favourite scented candle and a little vase of fresh flowers.

A fabric-covered mood board looks pretty and will also help get those creative juices flowing.  A small lamp on your desk is great for both task lighting and decorative purposes.
