Illuminating the outdoors in New Zealand requires specialist knowledge and materials. Whether it’s harsh climatic conditions, chemicals present in fertiliser or the risk of vandalism, there are many factors to consider. We heard from Lighting Revolution about how to get outdoor lighting right.

Creating the perfect outdoor lighting is a matter of balance – from the way the light falls to the materials and how the fittings are crafted. It’s a delicate process driven by specialist knowledge and continuing technological advancements.

In New Zealand, Lighting Revolution are at the forefront of this process, working closely with world-leading manufacturers Hunza and LuxR, who are also based in Auckland, to identify and develop ranges of landscape lighting tailored specifically for New Zealand conditions.

We work closely with the staff at the Hunza and LuxR factory, which is located across the road from us in Auckland. They have specialist and advanced testing equipment for ensuring quality and developing new advanced product solutions that exceeds what has been possible before. Lighting Revolution’s Gabrielle Peace says.

“There aren’t too many manufacturers in New Zealand that have the type of testing capabilities we have in conjunction with Hunza.”

In terms of manufacturing for specific environmental conditions, Hunza and Lighting Revolution are at the forefront of technology. “For example, Hunza have specially-developed atmospheric testing chambers where different environments can be created to test light fittings - from a hot, humid rainforest-like environment through to snowy winter conditions like that of central Otago,” Gabrielle says.

“This allows the light fittings to be subjected to horrendous conditions so we can guarantee they are suitable for the New Zealand climate. Hunza also manufactures for international markets so they are able to create conditions for places that have different degrees of severity, whether it’s the hot days of Dubai where light fittings might be in temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, or in a place where the makeup of fertilisers is likely to have an impact on the light fittings over time.

”However, atmospheric conditions are not the only thing landscape lighting is exposed to. “IK testing equipment measures impact resistance so if lighting is being supplied for public spaces we can prove it will be protected from vandalism,” Gabrielle says.

“We have this full range of tools available to us - something that is really uncommon for New Zealand. The great thing about working so closely with Hunza is that they allow us not only to use this equipment with their products, but with our other products too. So if we’re specifying products from our European ranges for example, we can provide surety that those products meet the same exceptional standard as our locally-made products do and that they will perform the way we expect them to in New Zealand conditions.”

Lighting Revolution specialises in landscape lighting solutions, working closely with both architects, suppliers and clients to design outdoor lighting solutions crafted from premium materials including marine grade stainless steel and solid copper.

“With solid copper and our marine grade stainless fixtures, customers can expect these to last forever because we manufacture our fittings from solid metal and all of the consumable components are serviceable,”Gabrielle says. “Other forms of manufacturing such as casting, pressing or spinning use other grades of copper, stainless or aluminium  which have impurities in them or are subject to manufacturing stressors, both of which can lead to a weakened final product.”

In contrast, Lighting Revolution’s products are all crafted from solid high grade material, allowing for a superior final product designed to outperform and outlast other styles of outdoor lighting.

Based in Auckland, Lighting Revolution are suppliers to retail and wholesale outlets around the country, while also offering bespoke design services for clients and architects.
