In this series, we share the style cues homeowners can take from some of Australia’s most beautiful shops, hotels, bars and restaurants. Get ready to be inspired!

Tucked away behind the rolling hills of the Southern Highlands in New South Wales is Osborn House, a five-star boutique hotel with a history that dates back to the 1890s. Together with owner Adam Abrams, award-winning interior designer Linda Boronkay, of Linda Boronkay Design Studio, has styled the interiors to pay homage to the heritage of the property while ensuring it feels luxuriously contemporary.

Osborn House takes style inspiration from the prestigious countryside homesteads found in the English Cotswolds. Furniture is upholstered in plush fabrics, the colour scheme is an abundant yet harmonious mix of blues, greens and yellows with accents of pinks, reds and teals. Rattan furniture stands alongside timber and stone pieces with ease, while the lighting selection is elegant and shapely.

Polished timber floors and wainscoting wall panels form a tactile yet subtle foundation on which artworks by Brent Lukey, Vicki Lee, Rob Brown, Sarah Maple and Kate Vella are displayed. The composition of each room is designed to be warm and inviting, while the furniture arrangement facilitates conversation and relaxed socialisation. As a result, every space, from the dining room and bar to the guest suites and library, feels characterful, sophisticated and timeless.

Lessons in design

Apply these decorative techniques to your own home or project to recreate your favourite elements of Osborn House.

Relax a formal space with rattan

Formal rooms furnished with upholstered chairs, premium materials and a refined palette can feel a little intimidating. However, you can mitigate this visual effect simply by adding pieces of rattan furniture. The lightweight construction of rattan coupled with its coastal connotations lends a relaxed air to any space without adding visual weight.

Use your walls strategically

A room with bare walls feels unfinished. Ensure your interior design scheme is fully resolved by utilising the creative opportunities presented by empty wall space. An oversized piece of art can fill an entire wall and act as a focal point for your space, while mirrors placed opposite windows can reflect leafy aspects, landscapes or ocean views to create the illusion of space.

Balance colour with furniture placement

Using multiple colours and textures within one room to create a soothing visual experience is an art form. Linda Boronkay has achieved this creative feat by balancing colour with symmetrical furniture arrangements. The two blue armchairs reflect the position of the pink sofa, while the two blue coffee tables echo the placement of the two pink armchairs by the window. The rounded ottoman reflects the round side table and pendant light.
