With land and house prices at a premium, shouldn’t we be filling the gaps in our cities before using up more green land? We asked architects Madeline Sharpe from Jasmax and Gerald Parsonson from Parsonson Architects to discuss what we need to do to create more sustainable cities through infill housing and urban regeneration.
Jasmax has designed 113 new homes for the Fenchurch neighbourhood in Tamaki, Auckland, as part of the Tāmaki Regeneration Programme which will deliver 7500 new homes over the next 10-15 years.
In the Fenchurch neighbourhood, a centrally located landscaped pocket park forms the hub of the development – a vibrant place to create a strong and connected community.

The Fenchurch neighbourhood is a blind mixed-tenure model, which means there are social, affordable and market homes.
Parsonson Architects' Salmont Place project is a very modern renovation that utilises the existing concrete structure of a two-storeyed 1950s house and transforms it into two cleverly laid-out apartments overlooking Wellington harbour. Photograph by David
Cleverly designed washing lines in Parsonson Architects' Salmont Place apartments are both discreet and in keeping with the architecture.
Jasmax reimagines over 75,000m² of Christchurch's travel network and public realm, providing the foundation for a healthier and safer city centre that aims to triple cycle and pedestrian movement by 2041 in line with increasing population growth.
The bright and spacious interior of one of the Zavos Corner apartments is a far cry from the previous 1930s single house that used to sit on the site in a state of poor repair.
