Forrester Gallery Extension: A Heritage Landmark Enhanced with Oamaru Stone

Thames Street in Oamaru is home to the iconic Forrester Gallery, a masterpiece of Neo-Classical architecture. This Category 1 Heritage building, admired by both locals and visitors, stands as a testament to Oamaru’s rich history. Originally constructed in 1884 as the Bank of New South Wales, the building now serves as a gallery, showcasing an impressive array of art from local talents, both past and present.

Recent exhibitions at the gallery have included Legendary Lollies: 75 Years of Crafting Confectionery in Oamaru, Like the Turf—a fascinating look at Pākehā history through the experiences of skilled immigrants from southern England—and the intriguingly titled Seriously Valuable Art, which challenges the notion that significant art must come with a hefty price tag.

We’re thrilled to announce Oamaru Stone’s involvement in Stage 2 of the Forrester Gallery Project. This exciting development includes a three-storey extension at the rear of the building, designed to provide additional exhibition spaces and much-needed storage for the gallery’s growing collection. Beginning in the basement, the extension will be similar in size to the current structure and will harmonise perfectly with the original building’s design.
