Central to the Kew Residence project’s seamless sophistication is the extensive use of single materiality; Nikpol’s moody Graphite Denver Oak cabinetry is used extensively throughout the project, enriching every room to create cohesiveness and depth within the modern interior of this home.
Established in 1978, Nikpol has evolved from a small two-person operation to become a leading supplier for the building, renovation and commercial joinery market throughout Australia with a team of over 140 employees across three locations.
Having secured distribution deals with Europe's leading manufacturers, including Egger, Motivi, Renolit and Blaupunkt, the Nikpol name has become synonymous with the best in European design and innovation.
Having worked with the client previously, Jack Fugaro, Architect and Designer at Jack Fugaro Architecture, was briefed on the Melbourne-based project. The clients, a professional couple with children, sought a modern, dark and minimalist design with extensive built-in storage.
“It's a boutique project of two detached dwellings, each designed for future multi-generational change,” says Jack. “It was designed with an urban working family in mind, so we just wanted to keep it simple – clean lines and highly functional.”
“They didn't want any clutter with the project. So, by utilising Nikpol's designer in-built cabinetry for everything – from the kitchen and bathroom to wardrobes, study nooks, the entertainment unit and bookshelves – avoided the need for excess furniture coming into the property. The idea being that the cabinetry is the furniture,” adds Fugaro.
With traditional minimalism trending in deeper tones with interiors, we are seeing modern projects infusing the minimalist principles of simplicity and clean lines with a darker monochromatic palette to form simple and uncluttered spaces that create a solid comfort in their form.
Jack’s use of recessive design elements throughout the Kew Residence project unifies and enhances the spaces, offering boundless functionality and effortless style.
“It was designed for a young family, so the look that we're trying to achieve with these dark tones was a sophisticated look that still felt like a home,” explains Fugaro.
“I am client-led with styling, but there is a practical side of things, such as going with darker cabinetry as it’s more forgiving and assists investors by increasing longevity. Especially when combined with more solid products like stone or concrete,” adds Fugaro.
Fugaro’s ability to instill interest and creativity in the Kew Residence project with only single-toned cabinetry demonstrates his skill as a designer and the adaptability of Nikpol’s extensive range.
While offering seamless integration and efficient storage, Nikpol’s designer cabinetry in Graphite Denver Oak also frames the kitchen in a warm and modern embrace. The dark tone is softened with the woodgrain finish and texture, contributing to the overall moody, minimalist aesthetic.
“When you walk into the kitchen, it's got a small courtyard towards the back of it, so when you're inside the space, the window positions and openings were placed so you could see the leafy trees outside, and it sort of brings that sense of nature back inside to soften the darker tones and straight lines,” says Fugaro.
There is a surprising diversity in applying Nikpol’s cabinetry within different areas of the Kew Residence, from walk-in wardrobes, bathroom cupboards, convenient study storage and display shelves to a living room feature.
“The house is calming and soothing with a sophisticated feel to it. We've got three-metre high ceilings in the living areas, a marble entertainment unit with a fireplace atop and a built-in Nikpol bookcase, which amplifies the experience of the space,” says Fugaro.
Fugaro’s ability to instill interest and creativity in the Kew Residence project with only single-toned cabinetry demonstrates his skill as a designer and the adaptability of Nikpol’s extensive range. This practical approach enhances the flow between these spaces, enabling a harmonious blend of work and relaxation for the family who will call it home.
