"A personal sanctuary is your favourite place in the home," says Law, “and it’s different for everyone. For me it’s a place that is specifically designed to create a nurturing environment which allows me to pursue my interests.”
This extends beyond a mere haven for relaxation; it encompasses an environment that allows individuals to engage in hobbies or delve into research – a place that feels truly special and tailored to one's unique desires.
At the heart of creating a personal sanctuary lies a deep understanding of the inhabitants. When creating a personal sanctuary within the home, the design process begins with a comprehensive exploration of clients' needs and desires for their new home.
This foundational knowledge informs the shaping of the space, focusing on balancing its elements and defining its use as a sanctuary.
“From there, you can begin designing and shaping the room, paying attention to balancing the space and defining its use as a sanctuary. This can be done by finding ways to direct or control natural light and or ventilation, flow of the room and its connection to the rest of the home, and sizing the room based on the client's needs.”
Anything that can be built/designed into the structure of the home at the earliest stages of the project will help ensure that the home and sanctuary space feel natural and effortless.
The delicate balance between aesthetics and functionality is a challenge often faced in design. Black Line Concepts adheres to the principle of 'form follows function.' By prioritising the flow of the house and the essential needs of the clients, the design naturally evolves, allowing additional features to complement the form.
“We find using this approach naturally allows the development of any room or sanctuary’s aesthetic to emerge,” shares Law. “On this basis, options for controlling natural light through glazing come into play, as well as material selections to help refine the aesthetic of the space without compromising its use.”
When it comes to colour, it’s important the personal sanctuary reflects the individual’s preferences. While pastels and coastal palettes are known for their calming effects, Law emphasises the importance of experimentation.
“Beige and blue are a tried and true combination, but sometimes a dark earthy tone or royal greens can help the eye unwind.”
The psychology of colour is vast, and Law encourages clients to explore different colour palettes to find hues that create peace and harmony in their space.
Lighting is a key player in setting the mood for a serene space. Task-specific lighting, including overhead lights for functional areas, dimmable options, and a variety of fixtures like pendants and floor lamps, all contribute to creating an ambiance.
Law underscores the significance of limiting direct artificial light to foster a sense of calm.
“Limiting direct artificial light and creating a soft glow is always going to create a sense of calm and serenity. Simple systems like dimmers and under bench lighting are great, and if you're utilising smart home applications, taking the time to programme preset moods will add to that feeling of an effortless sanctuary.”
Technological advancements, such as smart home applications, further enhance the ability to program preset moods, adding to the effortless tranquillity of the space.
The choice of materials is more than just about aesthetics; it's about creating a tactile experience. Exterior materials serve as the first impression when arriving home, setting the tone for what follows. Internally, materials like timber floors versus polished concrete offer different sensory experiences.
“The material choices and textures should be something that evoke your senses and that you're excited to return to at the end of your day. They should either reinvigorate you, or give you that relaxing separation from the world, shares Law. “Internally, we also believe in maintaining flow, through clean lines, and carefully selected feature materials or greenery, to help define a sanctuary space and give that tactile experience.”
The selected materials should invigorate or provide a relaxing separation from the outside world, contributing to the overall sanctuary experience.
Understanding the habits and lifestyles of clients plays a crucial role in determining the spatial layout of a new home. Applying passive principles, such as positioning the master bedroom to capture morning light, contributes to the optimisation of space based on individual needs.
“Principles like these can also be applied to personal sanctuaries based around when you plan to use the space or how it needs to be used and connected to the rest of the home,” says Law.
Questions about usage, connectivity to the rest of the home, and even the proximity of children's bedrooms are important considerations in creating a harmonious flow within the residential sanctuary.
Even in urban environments, a connection to nature is essential. Ground-level openings like bi-fold glass to inner courtyards or the addition of green spaces within the home, such as living walls or atriums, bring elements of nature indoors. These design choices contribute to a sense of well-being and tranquillity.
A standout example of the transformative power of well-designed personal sanctuaries is showcased through a recent project designed by Black Line Concepts. A couple building their forever home sought individual spaces – a work-from-home area catching morning light for the wife and a pool and entertainment room for the husband.
“The trick with these two spaces was to have them connected so as they each did their own thing, in their personal sanctuaries, they could still be connected so they didn't feel separated,” shares Law. “We designed a large, split-level, semi-mezzanine-style open office, with high east-facing glass that also looked over a second lounge/pool room with enough space to entertain.”
The design not only met their specific needs but significantly improved their overall sense of well-being and personal motivation.
As technology increasingly integrates into homes, the challenge lies in incorporating smart home solutions seamlessly without compromising tranquillity. Law points to the game-changing aspects of room automation and easy app connectivity. From a design perspective, integrating functions like motorised window treatments into feature bulkheads ensures a clean look. The option to enhance technology in the future through upgradable components provides flexibility and allows for the evolution of the sanctuary's functionality.
The creation of exceptional residential spaces, specifically personal sanctuaries, involves a delicate interplay between the art and science of design. It requires a deep understanding of the inhabitants, a commitment to balance aesthetics with functionality, and a thoughtful integration of elements that contribute to a sense of tranquillity and well-being. As individuals embark on the journey of designing their personal sanctuaries, the key lies in embracing the unique elements that bring joy, peace, and fulfilment to their living spaces.
