Bridging Design and Practicality in Window Furnishings: A Conversation with Mitchell Flight

As part of the Hunter Douglas Group, Tuiss Blinds Online has built a strong reputation in the Australian residential market, offering made-to-measure window furnishings that balance considered design with practical simplicity.
Now, with the appointment of Mitchell Flight as Head of Commercial, the business is expanding its focus into the project space, supporting architects, designers and builders working across custom homes and residential developments.
Focused on architect-led homes and residential builds, the new commercial division brings dedicated project support while retaining the streamlined, made-to-measure model that underpins the brand’s success. By pairing high-quality, flexible solutions with commercial expertise, Tuiss aims to deliver efficiency, accessibility and design integrity across modern residential projects.
We spoke with Mitchell about his journey with the business, the opportunity he sees in the build sector, and how a simplified approach to window furnishings can support better project outcomes.
Mitch, can you tell us about your journey with the business and how you’ve arrived at leading the commercial division?
"My journey with Tuiss started in 2020 as a Customer Service Representative, jumping into the world of windows, blinds and interiors after a background in hospitality. I quickly developed a genuine interest in the products, the design side, and helping clients through the entire process.
By 2021, I stepped into a Senior role, working on more complex projects and supporting the team to deliver a high level of service. In 2022, I became Customer Service Team Leader, leading the team, managing performance and ensuring every order met expectations.
Along the way, I identified an opportunity to grow our commercial offering. After presenting a plan to leadership in late 2025, I’ve now stepped into the role of Head of Commercial. It’s an exciting next step, bringing together creativity, attention to detail and a passion for window furnishings, while building strong partnerships across the industry."

Having worked closely with the brand, what strengths translate particularly well into the project and specification space?
"Having spent several years within the Tuiss and Hunter Douglas network, I’ve developed a strong understanding of what clients need to achieve successful outcomes. That includes balancing design intent with budget and timelines, and identifying potential challenges early.
Attention to detail is a big part of that, as well as understanding how products perform in real spaces. It means the projects we support don’t just meet requirements, they make a big impact to the overall look and feel of the home."

How does the commercial division differ from the traditional retail side of the business?
"The commercial experience is much more tailored and project-focused. Clients work with a dedicated contact from start to finish, with support across product selection, ordering and installation.
We understand that projects often run to tight timelines, so our approach is responsive and straightforward. With prioritised manufacturing and clear communication throughout, the goal is to make specifying window furnishings as seamless as possible."
What are architects and builders looking for when specifying window furnishings for residential projects today?
"Love this question! It usually starts with aesthetics. Products need to complement the overall design and bring the space together. Window furnishings are often one of the final elements considered in a project, so the finishes and fabrics really need to tie the space together visually.
From there, functionality becomes key. Light control, privacy and energy efficiency are all important considerations, along with durability and ease of maintenance. Depending on the project, acoustic performance can also come into play. Every brief is different, but it’s always about finding the right balance between form and function."

How does having a dedicated commercial lead improve the experience for design professionals?
"Having a single point of contact makes a big difference. It simplifies the process and gives clients confidence that they’re being supported throughout the project.
From product knowledge and design guidance through to installation advice and troubleshooting, it’s about making sure everything runs smoothly. It also means clearer communication and a more efficient overall experience. Plus, you always have one go-to person throughout your projects, so you can order with total confidence."
Tuiss is known for its made-to-measure, DIY model. How does that translate into value for residential builders and developers?
"That model brings a lot of efficiency to projects. Made-to-measure products ensure consistency across spaces, while the simplified DIY installation process helps reduce time on site.
It also supports better cost control, without compromising on design. For builders and developers, that balance of quality, flexibility and efficiency can make a real difference, especially across multi-dwelling or time-sensitive projects."
