Sustainable and responsible forestry, the key to our future

Responsible Wood, Australia’s largest forest certification scheme, has celebrated the role that sustainable forest management has played in preserving forests now and for the future.
Responsible Wood is the Australian National Governing Body for PEFC in Australia – and manager of the Australian Standard for Sustainable Forest Management.
PEFC forest certification plays an important role in ensuring that forest remains forest all over the world.
The Responsible Wood CEO, Simon Dorries, said sustainable forestry was key to a prosperous and healthy future for Australian society and the environment.
“As the sixth most forested country in the world, Australia’s forest sector plays a critical role in ensuring that forests can continue to benefit the nation’s environment, climate, communities and economy for generations to come.”
“Forests are one of Australia’s greatest natural assets, and Australia has first class forest management skills, experience and people, and an international reputation for sustainable management of our forests.”
“Wood from sustainably managed forests supports and promotes a circular economy, which is a key solution to combat climate change,” Mr Dorries said.
The Responsible Wood certification scheme, through the Australian Standard for Sustainable Forest Management (AS 4708) and Chain of Custody Standard (AS 4707) covers more than 11.4m hectares of Australian native and plantation forests. This represents over 90 per cent of Australia’s commercial forest production.
“The Responsible Wood Certification Scheme is recognised globally as a leading certification scheme for natural and plantation forests,” Mr Dorries said.
The United Nations General Assembly declared 21 March the International Day of Forests in 2012 to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests.
