Flooring trends don’t change nearly as often as fashion (thank goodness), or even other home decor, but we are in a period of evolution thanks to advancing technologies. This means that we have more choice and with more choice comes more decision making!

In this post, we’ll take a look at the different textures of flooring; what’s in style and what the difference is between the various textures. Scrapes, knots, wire brushes, you name it. Flooring these days is not just about the visual appearance of being aged and worn, but it has to have the same unique texture and feel.

These textures previously have only been available in solid wood, but we are seeing a trend across the board in hard surfaces this year.

Okay, so the textures we’re about to discuss are similar and often confused with one another. The one thing to remember is that textured flooring options come with its own unique style and character, but they are different in look and feel underfoot. So, take your shoes off and head over to our showroom to really feel the difference!

Textured Flooring - What’s the difference?

Hand scraped textured flooring features long, ingrained scrapes with high variation between planks, making each individual plank appear handcrafted, unique and rare. It gives a warm, classic look to modern homes and works well on solid or engineered wood floors.

Wire brushed flooring shows subtle, intentional wire scratches leaving the appearance of exposed wood on the surface. These imperfections are smoother and more consistent than hand scraped or distressed looks. By choosing a wire brushed texture, you can achieve a more rustic look in your home since more of the natural grain of the wood is exposed and you can see more of the knots and character present in wood flooring, and is a good way to bring the rugged and bare feel of nature into your home, while keeping it stylish and sophisticated.

Distressed textured flooring is often mistaken for hand scraped. Distressed floors look as though they’ve been through a lot of wear and tear. You can expect to see the appearance of scrapes, burns, knots, wormholes and more, giving these floors an aged, antique look. Distressed wood flooring is ideal for use in any design that has an antique, ‘old world’ or well-worn feel. It’s perfect for creating a cosy, authentic or a time-worn feel. It both complements and enhances any traditionally designed décor and can often be used as a contrast in many modern designs.
