When choosing electric underfloor heating, it’s easy to assume that all systems are basically the same. After all, they all deliver heat under your floors, right?
When it comes to safety, moisture protection, and long-term reliability, the construction and design of the heating element can make a world of difference.
Here’s what most people don’t realise: the internal structure of your heating mat—and whether it can be earthed—has major implications for how it performs over time, especially in wet environments like bathrooms, saunas, or laundry rooms.
Let’s break it down.
This article explains why Warmset’s Italian-made technology stands out in the Australian market and how it compares to the top 5 electric underfloor heating brands.
Warmset uses a flat ribbon heating element with multiple insulation layers, including a groundable outer layer that connects to your home’s electrical earthing system. This allows Warmset to:
Prevent dangerous voltage buildup (step voltage).
Trigger your RCD safety switch instantly in case of damage.
Actively protect against moisture-related faults.
In other words, if something goes wrong—like a tile shifting or a sharp object puncturing the floor—Warmset can direct the fault current safely to earth and immediately trigger the safety switch (RCD), protecting both people and property.
This design is unique in the Australian market, giving Warmset a major edge over most competitors.
We analysed the top five electric underfloor heating brands in Australia (including one high-end brand made in Europe, Competitor 4) and here’s how they stack up:
Now let’s compare this with other products on the market.
Competitor 1:
Uses standard twin-core heating cables.
No grounding of the outer insulation.
Relies solely on the RCD for safety.
Competitor 2:
Includes a metal shield (mainly for EMF reduction).
The shielding may be grounded, but it’s not intended as part of a safety fault pathway.
Insulation layers are fewer, and grounding is not part of the main design logic.
Competitor 3:
Similar to Competitor 1 with twin-core cable and basic insulation.
No earthing capability of the outer layer.
Requires external sealing to protect against moisture.
Competitor 4:
These may include some level of shielding or braiding, but it’s not consistently designed to serve as a protective earth layer.
Effectiveness depends on specific product and installation method.
Competitor 5:
Uses standard twin-core heating cables.
No grounding of the outer insulation.
Relies solely on the RCD for safety.
Why Grounding Matters More Than You Think
One of the most overlooked risks in underfloor heating is something called step voltage—the difference in electric potential between two points (like your feet) during a fault. If the heating mat is damaged and not properly earthed, you could be at risk of shock even without touching anything.
What Is Step Voltage—and Why Should You Care?
Step voltage is the difference in electrical potential between your feet if you’re standing near a fault current path (like a wet floor above a damaged cable). It’s a hidden risk in poorly protected systems.
Warmset’s grounded outer layer neutralizes step voltage, offering protection that other systems simply can’t.
Most electric underfloor heating systems pass basic safety standards. But that doesn’t mean they’re built with the same attention to long-term performance and moisture resilience.
Warmset’s advanced, multilayer design and grounding capability are not just extras—they’re fundamental to its DNA. And in a country like Australia where wet rooms are common and floors are built on slabs, that matters.
Choosing Warmset isn’t just about comfort—it’s about long-term peace of mind. You get:
Superior moisture protection
Groundable safety design
Compliance with Best Available Techniques (BATs)
And the reassurance of Italian innovation, made to last.
