Whether you are planning home renovations in Ponsonby or Kohimarama there are some basic things you should keep in mind as you make your plans.

What do you want to achieve with your renovations?

Having a clear plan about what your renovations should encompass and what the end result should be will help you to plan and design properly. It will also help you communicate your ideas to your architect or draughtsman.

Do you want the renovations to match, complement or contrast your existing property?

This is especially important if you are planning an extension or addition. Think about whether you want to match the exterior or contrast it. Perhaps you live in an older house but want to add a modern extension. These things are all possible but need a good architect to ensure it looks right.

What is your budget and do you have a contingency?

Just like with new home builds it is easy to run over budget with renovations. Make a list of all the things are non-negotiable and fit those into your budget first and then you can make choices about the things you would like to have if you can afford them. Having a contingency for unforeseen extra costs is also a good idea.

Where will you be while the renovations are taking place?

If you are planning extensive home renovations then the job could take a while and there may be times when your services like water or electricity have to be turned off. Think about whether you could live elsewhere during the work or whether you will need to live on site.
