In the world of swimming pools, concrete pools stand out for their versatility, durability, and bespoke design capabilities. To delve deeper into the advantages of concrete pools, we spoke with Chris Sweeney from Pioneer Unique Pools & Spas, an expert in pool construction and design. Here, we explore the key benefits and unique features that make concrete pools a top choice for many homeowners.
Advantages of concrete pools
Using shotcrete, pools are have the advantage of structural integrity.
"A shotcrete pool is a structure; it's built to a design specific to that pool and designed by an engineer with all the supporting paperwork by the engineer, contractor, and council," Chris explains. This means that concrete pools can withstand significant environmental stressors, such as liquefaction, due to their weight and the ability to incorporate pressure relief valves.
Shotcrete pools can be created in any shape or depth, can stand alone or be built into the ground, and have the advantage of self-repair.
“They are waterproof and have the ability to 'heal' any hairlines or capillaries that may form.”
This shotcrete pool by Pioneer Unique Pools & Spas makes use of every inch of its tight suburban site.
Customisation options: crafting unique poolscapes
The ability to upgrade a shotcrete pool is similar to refurbishing a bathroom. Homeowners can easily swap out features such as lights, add steps, or cover recesses, and redo the interior. This flexibility in modification ensures that concrete pools can evolve with the homeowner’s needs and preferences over time.
Chris says homeowners are increasingly seeking unique features within their pools rather than just different shapes. "We're finding more that it’s modifications within the pool, like infinity edges, water features, lighting, and specialist tiles," he says. Concrete pools can accommodate these desires seamlessly. For instance, features like covers emerging from the floor, swim jets, and intricate tile designs are easily integrated into the concrete structure.
This ability to tailor every aspect of the pool allows homeowners to create personalised, one-of-a-kind poolscapes.
Chris says the advantages of a shotcrete pool are its “design flexibility, ability to upgrade, its waterproof structural structure, it can support or be an integral part of surrounding structures, can be fixed to/anchored to without compromising it, and can stand alone so doesn’t need other support.”
Durability & longevity: built to last
Concrete pools are renowned for their durability. Chris highlights that concrete reaches its ultimate strength at 105 years old, making it an incredibly long-lasting material. "As a structure, it requires a 50-year guarantee on the structural integrity and is built to a design standard and specification. Ask your engineer what alternative material could replace concrete that he could specify!" he adds.
The robust nature of concrete pools also means they can withstand various weather conditions. "The majority of the structure in most cases is in the ground, but concrete has shown to be very durable in any weather condition if you look at building structures," Chris explains. Whether facing extreme temperatures or adverse weather, a well-constructed concrete pool remains resilient.
The installation process
Installing a concrete pool is a meticulous process that differs significantly from other types of pools. The aim is to excavate a hole that matches the exact shape of the pool. This precision allows the ground to form the walls, with only the top 300mm being formed separately. "The floor is graded to match the pool floor shape, and where this isn’t possible, the pool shape is formed using formwork," Chris describes. This method ensures that the pool can support loads whether it is full or empty, showcasing another point of difference that concrete offers.
The shotcrete is then pneumatically applied to the formwork, which allows for any of the special requirements in the design such as lighting.
Maintenance considerations to keep your shotcrete pool in top shape
Maintaining a concrete pool involves careful attention to water balance. Chris emphasises that "concrete loves water" and reaches higher strength levels when submerged. However, improper water balance can lead to the extraction of calcium from the concrete and grout, which is also a concern for fibreglass and vinyl pools. Ensuring the correct water chemistry is therefore crucial to maintaining the pool’s integrity and longevity.
Innovative features & technologies
Concrete pools are at the forefront of integrating innovative features and technologies. Chris mentions several exciting options, such as polycarbonate viewing windows, covers that rise from the floor, fluorescent tiles, and moveable floors that can transform into walkable decking. Water features like laminars and even features where flames emerge from the water are also possible. These innovations not only enhance the visual appeal of the pool but also add functional value and enjoyment.
Ultimately, homeowners choose concrete pools for their structural reliability, uniqueness, and extensive customisation options. As Chris aptly puts it, "The design is only limited by the imagination. It’s a structure that requires a design, uniqueness, flexibility of options, and appearance." These qualities make concrete pools a superior choice for those looking to invest in a durable, customisable, and visually stunning swimming pool.
