Level-up your living room with furniture that makes a statement

Whether you’re in the process of furnishing your home or looking for a way to elevate your living room, a piece of statement furniture – coffee table, armchair, sofa or even a piece of art – is a great way to create a focal point, enrich the space, and tell a story

While vibrant and eclectic styles are a wonderful way to make an impact, they are not the only way. Subtle details can be just as impactful – for example, an item with impeccable craftsmanship or a repurposed piece with a history can become a star player in the room.

Furniture with feeling and function

Working out the desired look and feel of a living space can be a difficult task. Assessing the needs of your lifestyle, coupled with your personal tastes, can offer you some insight into which furniture will suit your space and practical needs.

“Emotion is the biggest factor – choosing the right furniture is about balancing the line between mind, functionality and heart,” explains Mandy Johnstone, co-owner of Home Italia, distributor of premium Italian furniture and an interior design and art consultancy. “We have two golden retrievers so we would never buy a white boucle sofa, because it would not suit our lifestyle. I think number one is to not be influenced by trends and really look at your lifestyle and how you live.”

Trends come and go so Mandy suggests spending time considering which styles and materials you are drawn to as well as the practicalities of your household, so the furniture you choose retains its allure through time.

Telling stories through objects

Luxury furniture exudes rarity and sophistication – statement pieces are an investment designed to last for years to come, acquiring a history of their own in the process.

Rather than conforming with the traditional notion of a piece of ‘statement furniture’ as something loud and showy, true luxury in the everyday can be found in furniture that is subtle and sophisticated, but most importantly, that the owner feels connected to.

“A statement piece for us is something that has a story. It’s more than just a piece of furniture,” explains Mandy. “We have just sold a Henge dining table made out of onyx found in the bottom of the Caspian ocean, there was enough in the world to make six dining tables. The beauty of this one piece of stone is that in 20 years’ time people will go ‘Look! that’s that piece from Henge’.”

A little luxury

The uniqueness of luxury furniture contributes to its visual and emotional appeal. Those who value premium craftsmanship and a good story see a statement piece as a precious object destined to become the subject of conversation for many years to come.

Truly luxurious furniture tends to also take time and talent to create. “Each piece isn’t just manufactured by one person – it might travel to three or four different artisans around Italy in the course of its creation.”
