One of Australia’s leading rug experts explains the ins and outs of investing in a statement piece of art for your floor.

It’s easy to forget the role rugs play in a successful interior scheme. Quietly occupying a patch of land underfoot, these versatile and useful decorating tools are so much more than a flooring option. A great rug can set the mood of a space, warm up a room, reduce noise, aid in temperature control, add texture, and even zone a breakout area within an open-plan layout.

However, many people forget that a statement rug can also add colour, pattern, personality and dimension to your interior – but doing so effectively requires a considered decorating approach. Yosi Tal, managing director of Designer Rugs, shares his expert advice on choosing the right statement rug for your home.

What is a statement rug?

According to Yosi, a statement rug is the true focal point of a room – whether it features a bold colour, a head-turning design or an unusual shape. “Statement rugs can be a great foundation to design a room around, much like a piece of art – but for your floor,” says Yosi. “In fact, we have many rugs designed by prominent Australian artists that can be used in lieu of a large artwork, often for a fraction of the cost.”

Due to the general size of rugs, they can be an effective way to add an impactful design element with just one investment piece. “In the most practical sense, going for a bold design can often hide a multitude of sins – pattern can help to disguise general wear and tear, especially with bright or dark colours,” says Yosi.

How do you style a statement rug?

“A bold rug can really suit any type of interior,” says Yosi. “While you may first think a statement rug is better suited to a more maximalist or eclectic style, we have designs that work beautifully as the main decorative element of a minimalist living room. Statement rugs can be a way to add your personality to a space, so our best advice is to make your own rules and find a rug design that brings you joy!”

While the way you work a statement rug into an existing scheme will depend on your own style interpretation, Yosi suggests being mindful of the colour, shape and style of the ‘fixed’ elements of your space, such as floor material, sofa, dining table and other similar items. “You want your rug to complement these things,” says Yosi. “Smaller pieces such as cushions, art and coffee table décor are where you can be more flexible, creative and let your statement rug lead the way.”

What you need to know before purchasing a statement rug

It’s important to remember that trends come and go, so while you may be tempted to choose the pattern or colour du jour, it’s best to purchase a rug that appeals to your unique personal taste.

“Our rugs are designed to last, so opting for something classic or that you know you’ll treasure for many years to come is the best way to go,” says Yosi. Have fun with your statement rug! Go with a rug that brings you a little moment of happiness every time you see it and don’t be afraid to choose something bold. Don’t forget that you can customise your design to create something unique to you, too.”

How to create your own statement rug

Crafting a custom rug can take the headache out of finding the perfect design, colour, size and shape for your space. “Almost all of our exclusive designs can be customised in every way you can imagine, right down to the material and finishes,” says Yosi. “Alternatively, you can bring us your ideas and inspirations and we can actually build a design from scratch that’s completely bespoke to you. It’s such a fun and rewarding process, and something we’ve specialised in for more than 30 years.”
