What is a Wall Hung Basin Exactly?

The term "Wall Hung Basin" is given to bathroom sinks that are mounted to the wall directly with wall fixing bolts, independantly from a supporting vanity or otherwise pedestal in standard bathroom settings. For this reason, Wall Hung Basins are often also called "Wall Mounted Basins, "Wall Hung Sinks" or "Wall Mounted Sinks".

Is A Wall Hung Basin Right for Me?

It's not uncommon to see wall hung basins utilized in any bathroom space, but this configuration is more advantageous in smaller bathroom settings, ensuites and powder rooms. The main reason is they typically have a shorter depth, returning space to the bathroom at both the waist and floor heights.

Looking past functionality, wall mounted basins are a great way to create a floating aesthetic and flex minimalist flair due to the wide range of contemporary shapes and styles available, so you won't have to sacrifice design for functionality.

What Are the Benefits of A Wall Mounted Basin?

While we've already figured out that the Wall Hung basin's main attraction is to save space, there are also a few other factors that make this type of basin configuration great.

Because it's mounted directly and independently to the wall, a wall hung basin can be installed at a height more suited to you. The basin is a place you'll be spending a lot of time in front of, so considering ergonomic factors during planning and installation, eg. negating strain on your back is all possible with this kind of setup.

With the floor space clear, cleaning also becomes easier, as there are less places for dirt and grime to build up.

The wide range of styles available and it's rise in popularity over recent years has seen a lot of product designers (ourselves included) develop wall hung basins with a good amount of built-in shelf space regardless of even shorter projections, so although you'll be saving a considerable amount of space, the problem of shelving to place bathroom necessities like hand soaps and toothbrush holders is negated.

Lastly, because a wall hung basin is mounted without the need of any support such as a vanity, bench top or pedestal (which are obviously additional expenses), opting for a wall hung basin is typically much more cost effective as nothing else is required beyond the tapware, plug & waste and bottle trap.

Are there Downsides to Using a Wall Mounted Basin?

There are only a couple of considerations to make when deciding whether a wall hung basin is the right choice for you. Adequate wall support is required, and although we mentioned above that a wall mounted sink can be mounted at a height that suits you, the point at which the basin is mounted must still be able to support much more than just the basin weight, so it's always a good idea to check this first with a professional.

In most cases and styles, the piping underneath the basin will be exposed, meaning you'll need a bottle trap that suits your design aesthetic. While this is merely a consideration, it does open the opportunity to match metallic finishes with your tapware and we personally find that bottle traps look great when selected with this consideration.

And finally, and probably the biggie to consider, is the obvious lack of storage space given that the basin is mounted independantly, so storage space that you would usually get from perhaps a wall hung vanity or bench top is not available.

What Wall Hung Basin Styles are Available?

Wall Hung basins are available in any style to suit your desired design aesthetic, from soft square architectural pieces, to more round, organic shapes. They are accessible at a wide range of widths to suit your particular bathroom project, from ultra small powder room basins of about 300mm to wide focal point, attention stealing pieces up to 1200mm. These wider basins are often perfect for the his/hers type configuration allowing for 2 sets of basin mixers. As mentioned previously, adequate shelf space is readily available and recommended, with configurations for left or right side shelves, and opposing tap landing decks too.
