A Rare Pair of 17th Century Carved Kneeling Angels

$4,650
Carved Softwood

A very special pair of Continental 17th century carved softwood angels kneeling on a cloud bank. One angel is modelled bowing her head in supplication, while the other is modelled with hands crossed at the chest. The wood is likely limewood, which was the favoured wood of the day for the Master carvers of that period, such as Grinling Gibbons. These would originally have gilt accents in the clouds and folds of drapery. In the Bible, angels are a medium of God's power; they exist to execute God's will. Angels reveal themselves to individuals as well as to the whole nation, to announce events, either good or bad, affecting humans. There are two small losses to fingers and a historic repair to the neck of one angel.
