Step 1: Prepare
It is important that CUTEK® Interior be applied to a clean, dry and smoothly sanded wood surface. You must appropriately prepare your timber BEFORE applying CUTEK® Interior.
If you have… BARE TIMBER
Lightly sand your surface smooth using 180 grit sandpaper. Be careful to only sand in the direction of the grain and ensure you remove all traces of sanding dust after sanding. Clean the surface with mineral turpentine to remove stains, dirt, wax, grease and oil from the substrate. Determine suitability of purpose by testing CUTEK® Interior in an inconspicuous area to check for extractive staining and acceptable gloss level prior to coating the entire surface.
If you have… PREVIOUSLY COATED TIMBER
CUTEK® Interior MAY be applied on top of some previous coatings by using the following instructions. Lightly sand the surface using 180 grit sandpaper. Ensure that you remove all traces of sanding and coating residue after sanding. Test adhesion to the previous coating, by applying one coat of CUTEK® Interior to a small area and allow to dry for 4 hours. Press sticky tape firmly to the dried surface and pull off quickly. If any of the CUTEK® Interior coating comes off, sand back further until CUTEK® Interior adheres to the previous coated surface without coming off.
NOTE: CUTEK® Interior is a clear matt finish and any stains, visible scratches, imperfections, severe wear or surface contaminants left by previous coatings will be visible if not removed prior to application. Polish and/or wax finishes must be completely removed with a suitable polish remover as sanding will not provide appropriate adhesion for CUTEK® Interior.
Important information before proceeding
CUTEK® Interior may react with soluble extractives from high extractive timbers (such as Vitex) that can present as a discolouration in the dried coating. It is vital that the end user determine the suitability of CUTEK® Interior for their own purpose by testing a sample area first.
CUTEK® Interior is not compatible and should not be used in conjunction with CUTEK® Extreme CD50 and CUTEK® Wood Preservative.
CUTEK® Interior is not recommended for use on timber flooring or food preparation surfaces.
Step 2: Protect
Safety And Precautions
Before you begin to Protect your timber, note the hazards and precautions on this label and ensure that you have obtained and know how to use the correct safety equipment. CUTEK® Interior is a hazardous chemical. It is important to refer to the health and safety considerations listed in the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) PRIOR to commencement of your project. When using CUTEK® Interior all adjacent surfaces and vegetation must be adequately protected.
Application:
Before and during use, ensure that CUTEK® Interior is stirred thoroughly, making sure you stir from the bottom of the can. CUTEK® Interior must be applied to a clean and dry surface.
Apply CUTEK® Interior to all visible faces of the wood with a paint pad, brush or roller ensuring that the coat is even and without pooling. If applying with a brush or paint pad, ensure you brush in the direction of the grain. Allow to dry for a minimum of 2 hours.
TIP: Sanding between coats may not be required as long as the time between coats is less than 16 hours. If the time between coats is greater than 16 hours, lightly sand using 180 grit sand paper.
After sanding, wipe the surface clean before the subsequent coat. Apply the subsequent coat evenly and without pooling. For best results, a third coat should be applied.
NOTE: While surface may feel completely dry after several hours, full cure may take up to 7 days. Protect coated surfaces until full cure is achieved.
Clean-Up:
Equipment may be cleaned with water. Ensure wash water is disposed in accordance with local regulations.
CUTEK® began as a problem solver in the market. We understood that timber is beautiful, however because it is a natural resource, it can have some inherent problems when using it to create lasting structures. The original CUTEK® formula was created to displace water from timber, giving it increased dimensional stability. We have then evolved to create other formulas included CUTEK® Wood Preservative, a decorative wood coating (that is able to be coloured) which makes timber resistant to mould, fungus and termites while also keeping it dimensionally stable.
CUTEK® is forever anticipating change and need. If someone wants to use timber in a unique way, or in a unique setting, we want to work alongside them, troubleshooting the problem towards an inspired solution.
We have always been, and always will be, champions for the use of the timber in the building industry. If you want to use it, we will help you find a way.
