French Eighteenth Century Escritoire (desk) C.1780

$6,500

This refined desk is a French escritoire from the late 18th century, circa 1780, complete with working locks. It features a kingwood veneer with intricate cross-banding in rosewood and boxwood. The marquetry is exceptional, showcasing a rich array of exotic timbers. The desk flap is lined with tooled brown leather and supported by steel brackets, offering a writing surface of W910mm x D360mm. Inside, the desk reveals a beautifully crafted theater with four drawers on each side and a central compartment with a pull-down door, which can be locked via a hidden mechanism beneath one of the drawers. The tapered legs are elegantly adorned with a geometric pattern and finished with bronze sabots.
