This stunning and unique piece of door furniture was designed by architects Robert Gluckman and Tom Smith. Their experience covers private residential work and arts and workspace projects.

Gluckman Smith specialises in projects that require a contemporary response to sensitive settings, whether historic, urban or rural. Within each context, the practice has established a particular expertise in working with buildings where fresh thinking and a refined finish are desired.

The design of the Woldon doorknob draws inspiration from the grip patterns found in traditional hand-made English shotgun manufacturing. The patterns are hand-carved into the stock of the gun, providing a grip that is practical yet beautiful and tactile. From this source of inspiration, a concept evolved for the door knob design.

The team at Joseph Giles loved the concept and appreciated the form and design of the piece. The surface texture was applied using a CNC lathe. While this is not a new manufacturing tool, the nature of the variable sizes of the diamond pattern, coupled with the curved profile design resulted in a lengthy R&D process to achieve the desired finish.

Every facet of this piece is crafted for touch and the experience it provides when used. This door knob is available in all our standard finishes and is ideally suited for projects where architectural detail is key.

Tom Smith said “We felt that Joseph Giles had the aesthetic sensibility and the technical skill to take our door knob design from concept to reality”.

Felix Ure, Design Manager at Joseph Giles said “The attention to detail in the design of the product by Gluckman Smith was incredible, every touch was completely thought out. This project was challenging to deliver given the complexities of the design and we believe the manufacturing process is an industry first”.
