Founded in 1930 by George Daniel Rutter, as an importing agent specialising in builders’ hardware. Three generations and 90 years later GD Rutter has grown to be one of New Zealand's prominent suppliers of door and cabinet hardware to the hardware trade under the Sylvan brand name. In 2017 G D Rutter formed GDR Architectural providing commercial door automation solutions supported by the international brand Record.

Throughout the 90 years of business, there has always been a strong family influence with an emphasis on customer satisfaction and product quality.
