SAXE Folding Chair Dimensions - D670 x W600 x H840 x ⌀370 mm

When the visionary architect-cum-designer, Mogens Lassen, designed the Saxe folding chair for The Cabinetmaker’s Guild Competition in 1955, it was considered a bit too modern and audacious. Mogens Lassen was regarded as an enfant terrible and never left anything to chance, but paid attention to every single detail, which is evident in this characterful and timeless chair. Today, more than 60 years later, Saxe’s minimalistic and distinctive lines and the perfect combination of leather, oak wood and brass detailing are regarded just as modern – a truly prime example of function uniting with aesthetics and quality.

As in Mogens Lassen’s architecture, nothing in the chair’s design is left to chance and everything is worked out down to the smallest detail. The strong, stretched leather clings to the wood and creates an almost harmonious, organic form. The curved rivets in brass along with the back break with the otherwise stringent expression and exemplify the fact that Mogens Lassen was not afraid of going against the grain and breaking with conventions.

The collapsible chair invites an extra guest to join the gathering and with its minimalistic, simple expression is perfect in both large and small quality-conscious homes – and is at least as current and modern here 60 years on.

Made in Denmark

by Lassen is among the few Danish design companies that manufacture locally, and the Kubus collection is, together with many other by Lassen products, including the Frame collection, crafted by highly skilled Danish hands that take pride each day in producing Danish design, made in Denmark.

Craftsmanship

“Good craftsmanship must be valued.” Mogen Lassen’s quotation resonates into the very heart of the Lassen design ethos. Here high-quality materials, uncompromising expression and beautiful craftsmanship are valued in order to make products that can live on for generations.

Lassen is amongst the few Danish design companies that primarily manufacture locally. The Kubus collection, Frame storage solution and ML42 stools, amongst other products, are crafted by exceptionally skilled Danish craftsmen who take pride in delivering design pieces of the highest quality.

Design

The ML42 is already considered by many to be a design icon and has garnered widespread acclaim. With its organic rounded shapes and harmonious look, the stool appears just as modern as when it was designed 76 years ago. The ML42 is a unique example of modern Danish design, and its architect, Mogens Lassen, was well aware of it. Class and timeless design always speak for themselves.

Handcrafted

ML42 is one of the most seminal examples of how it is possible to combine aesthetics with good workmanship. Mogens Lassen knew that aesthetics could not stand alone. The craftsmanship was of equal importance, which is why the ML42 is still being made in an original way. We simply must ensure that the craftsmanship is commensurate with Mogens Lassen’s original stools.

Respect

Not only is the manufacturing process infused with the same love as when the products were originally created, but It is also the respect for each product’s individual history, the environment, and the joy of being part of the process that creates its high-quality craftsmanship that by Lassen is known for. Local manufacturing isn’t just a stamp on a product. It is by Lassen's firm belief.

WGU Design is a family-owned business which was founded in 2011 and built on the inspiration of a second-generation furniture maker and upholsterer. Eric says “ I grew up helping my father build things, and spent my early years around furniture. I grew to appreciate well put together pieces using sustainable wood, there is really nothing like a piece that has been handmade with care and attention to detail- a machine can’t replicate it”.

Eric’s keen eye for design and craftsmanship led him to brands such as Cane-Line and Menu, in response to the growing demand from both the industry and retail customers for high-end quality, designer furniture WGU Design opened its first Melbourne showroom In 2017. The success of the showroom has led to WGU Design being made a Flagship partner with Cane-Line, the only Flagship partner outside of Europe.

2018 has seen Erics’ wife Kelly join the business, with her background as a State Visual Merchandising Manager she brings another sharp eye for design and detail, both in sourcing furniture pieces and the showroom displays. Kelly says “ It’s been great to finally be able to join Eric in the business, my inspiration comes from his enthusiasm and good design pieces we come across in everyday life. We have completed a new fit-out for the showroom, where we draw on nature and places that inspire us”.

Believing that good design has an important role in the lives of their clients, they are constantly sourcing pieces that are not only beautiful but of the highest quality. Up until recently, WGU had specialised in designer outdoor furniture however, finding that both customers and industry professionals were wanting beautiful indoor pieces led them to the brand Artisan. Eric says “we are so excited to be able to showcase Artisan’s exceptional pieces, we took our time to source the right brand because not only do our clients demand quality we do also”.
