Shou Sugi Ban Charred Timber Cladding

Shou Sugi Ban charred timber cladding brings an elegant, timeless aesthetic to any project. Also known as Yakisugi or Japanese burnt timber cladding, Shou Sugi Ban is a traditional Japanese method of charring timber with fire. The process results in a black carbon layer on the timber boards which protects the material and reduces its maintenance requirements. Shou Sugi Ban is machined to the same profile as our Trendplank T&G Timber Cladding and will fit all Trendplank Corner Trims and End Stops.

At Mortlock Timber, Our charred timber cladding is manufactured in house at Mortlock Timber, allowing us to have precise control over the quality and consistency of the final product. We have spent years perfecting the Shou Sugi Ban process to ensure we provide the highest standard finish every time.

Shou Sugi Ban is manufactured in our factory using a machine that we designed and tested over two years before making our charred timber cladding products available. Shou Sugi Ban is a delicate process and over our trial period we have discovered some secrets to reducing the warping and splitting when charring the timber. Our process also involves a unique system to cool the timber in order to achieve an even finish.

Every piece of timber is individually graded and checked to ensure the highest standards are met. Hand-brushing and pre-finishing the planks can be completed prior to delivery to your site to save installation time. Our Shou Sugi Ban process results in an even charring, including right in the shadow line of the cladding, and is much more durable and weather-proof than black stained timber.

JAPANESE CHARRED TIMBER CLADDING FOR A TIMELESS FINISH

Shou Sugi Ban finish is applied to our Trendplank timber profile, a sophisticated concealed fixed cladding which performs beautifully as a lining for exterior and interior walls and ceilings. Trendplank offers superior durability thanks to its expert design which allows for natural timber movement in response to the environment. Our charred wood cladding comes with a range of corner solutions and end stop junctions which can be manufactured in the same timber and Shou Sugi Ban finish for a seamless result. Whether you would prefer the timber to be supplied uncoated or pre-oiled, we can accommodate. Shou Sugi Ban comes standard with the penetrating oil Cutek CD50 Black Ash coating which has been designed for external applications. For interior applications, we recommend using WOCA Black Oil to preserve the integrity of the timber and prevent any charcoal rubbing off the surface.

IDEAL TIMBER SPECIES FOR SHOU SUGI BAN

We offer Shou Sugi Ban finish on a number of quality timber species which are sourced from sustainably managed forests. From Australian Jarrah and Spotted Gum to North American Burnt Ash – we have a range of premier options that will complement and enrich your project. Burnt Ash – Premium Option is very durable and stable compared to Australian hardwoods, Burnt Ash allows for a very even charring and provides a thicker layer of char for superior durability and minimal maintenance. Fine Sawn Jarrah, second to Burnt Ash, Sawn Jarrah allows for deeper penetration of the char layer meaning improved longevity and reduced maintenance. Spotted Gum will achieve a BAL 29 and allows for a lovely natural texture to shine through. However, it is not as stable as Burnt Ash meaning the char layer is not as thick and so Spotted Gum will require more maintenance over time. Jarrah with Shou Sugi Ban finish is a cost-effective option with a beautiful appearance. Not as stable as Burnt Ash, this timber will require more maintenance over time to preserve its integrity.
