Thermomass Insulated Concrete Panel

Backed by 35 years of experience, Thermomass is the industry leader in concrete sandwich wall technology allowing New Zealand architects and designers to create walls that increase energy efficiency, durability and performance. You can take advantage of Thermomass’ concrete insulation systems for use in plant precast, tilt-up and cast-in-place projects.

The fact that the building is insulated from the outside means that the mass of the internal layer of concrete can be used as a heat sink for the building, passively regulating the temperature as the ambient temperature heats and cools over the day and night, slashing energy costs. Thermomass is a system, proven in New Zealand conditions, for insulating concrete panels during casting. Thermomass is used by choice by precasters in many parts of the country. Thermomass is a fully tested system where long-term thermal cycling and accelerated aging have demonstrated that the finished product can handle large swings in external temperatures without cracking and harsh alkaline concrete conditions without loss of embedment strength.

Because of the mass (storage) capacity of prefabricated concrete, which is isolated from external low temperatures by the non-conductive connectors and extruded polystyrene insulation, but open to daytime heat gains from the sun, the concrete can take out the worst of the impact from very cold conditions and very hot conditions.

Autocad and PDF details are immediately available for common situations. Specific detail solutions are developed on a case by case basis.

Features

The trusted insulated concrete panel technology you can rely on for enhanced thermal performance PERFORMANCE - Because of the mass (storage) capacity of concrete, which is isolated from external low temperatures by the non-conductive connectors and extruded polystyrene insulation, but open to daytime heat gains from the sun, the concrete can take out the worst of the impact from very cold conditions and very hot conditions. If we placed the same thickness of the same insulation material on the inside of the concrete these benefits would be very significantly reduced.

HEATING YOUR BACK (AGAINST WALLS) - The insulation in the wall across the full face means that the sun heats up the exposed concrete. There are limited losses so high temperatures are achieved.

LACK OF CONDENSATION - Condensation occurs when the Dew-point temperature on the concrete surface is reached. Because of the insulation position and the lack of thermal shorts (through careful design by Thermomass and Architects), these conditions are not reached. Because your window frames will be connected to the inside concrete some heat will flow into this frame helping to prevent condensation on the frame. Double glazing helps to prevent heat loss and condensation on the window themselves while the separation of inside and outside window frame elements assist the process even further.

Building professionals choose Thermomass as their insulated concrete panel system of choice for the following four reasons:

  1. Proven in New Zealand conditions - Thermomass is proven in New Zealand conditions for insulating concrete panels during casting and is used by precasters in many parts of the country.
  2. Insulated from the outside - The fact the building is insulated from the outside means the mass of the internal layer of concrete can be used as a heat sink for the building, passively regulating the temperature and reducing energy costs.
  3. Fully tested system - Thermomass is a fully tested system where long-term thermal cycling and accelerated aging have demonstrated the finished product can handle large swings in external temperatures without cracking and without loss of embedment strength.
  4. Impact from extreme cold and hot conditions is absorbed - Due to the storage capacity of concrete (which is isolated from external low temperatures by the non-conductive connectors and extruded polystyrene insulation, but open to daytime heat gains from the sun) the concrete can absorb the worst of the impact from very cold and very hot conditions.
FAQs

Why are concrete homes structurally superior?

No other building system can deliver a long-lasting structure as concrete can. The insulation is sandwiched between two concrete surfaces, ensuring it lasts for generations.

Are concrete homes rodent resistant?

Yes. Because there are no hidden access points, rodents cannot enter your home.

What makes concrete homes sound resistant?

Sound has a hard time penetrating the concrete mass through to the inside living area.

How are ownership costs reduced by lower maintenance?

Because the external surface is concrete - hail, sun, moisture and other natural elements cannot damage the external surface. Therefore current and future maintenance costs are virtually avoided.

How will owning a concrete home save me money?

Due to the structure, your heating, cooling and maintenance costs are significantly reduced – in some cases up to 50%
