Blackout Curtains

- Blackout curtains (or blockout curtains) are curtains designed to block all light from entering the room. Although most effective when a dark colour, blackout curtains do not have to be black. A wide range of colours, patterns, and thicknesses of curtain fabrics are available on ArchiPro, all of them sourced from trusted suppliers across Australia.

ArchiPro Products

ArchiPro’s catalogue of top quality curtains and curtain fabrics has been hand-selected from reputable suppliers in Australia. A good blackout curtain lining doesn’t just block out light, but also some heat and noise, contrary to sheer curtains which let the light in. This makes them an excellent choice for inner city dwellings, workplaces, homes off busy roads, those below flight paths and more. They do wonders for a good night’s sleep which is why they are becoming increasingly popular in Australia.

Track hung blackout curtains

Track curtains are attached via many points to a track above the window. The track may have an angled overhang overlapping the top of the curtain, which is excellent for minimising any reflected light.

Ring hung blackout curtains

Ring-style curtains have sewn on rings, which are then strung on a rod. The rod is then attached to the wall. Multiple sizes of curtain can fit on one railing as long as the ring is larger than the rod, so this is a common style used for readymade curtains.

French rod blackout curtains

French rods are a type of ring-style curtain where the rod bends back into the wall, allowing the curtain to curve around to touch the wall. This minimises the amount of light, sound and heat that can escape around the sides of the curtain.

The advantages of high-quality blackout curtains

A high-quality blackout curtain will block all light, as well as provide some thermal insulation. You can also expect a high-quality blackout curtain to be made of one or more tightly woven or felted curtain fabrics, and a blackout curtain liner.

This liner will be made of a smooth synthetic material, and will not allow any light through. It’s this liner that blocks airflow, which is why some blackout curtains also function as insulating curtains. If the liner isn’t of high enough quality, the curtains will not block all light.

How to choose blackout curtains that are right for you

Firstly, check what kind of curtain rail (if any) is already installed. If you choose to buy blackout curtains with a different method of attachment, you will have to replace the rail. Measure the height and width of your window, and then add an extra 5 to 10 cm on each side for the total width of the curtain. By making the curtains wider than the window, there is less chance of light leaking around the edges.
