RENOVATION OVERVIEW

This home was originally built in the late 1960’s, set down a long driveway, it overlooks the reserve and golf course. The client loved the feel of the home and the outlook which it provided, so purchased this home with a full renovation in mind. Abbey Lang Home was approached once the home had been purchased and the client was considering the new floor-plan. We proposed moving the kitchen to the south side of the open plan living area. This meant utilising the southern wall for the main expanse of cabinetry for the kitchen and orientating the island to be looking out to the view over the reserve. Skylights were suggested in this area to enhance the natural light.

The client engaged Paragon Solutions to draft the renovation. This was a collaborative process with the interior and exteriors in mind.

The client wanted the home to feel soft and homely, as well as being practical and highly functional. Their love of natural fibres and quality finishes was at the forefront of the design direction.

EXTERIOR

The exterior of the home was clad in cedar. The aluminium joinery was selected as ‘flaxpod’ which is essentially a soft black. Internally this added contrast and depth to the home, whilst framing the vista seen through each window and door. Externally the flaxpod defined the windows and set the palette for the coloursteel roofing and blockwork below.

KITCHEN

The southern wall of the kitchen is low, so the vertical battens and cabinetry design focuses on vertical lines to elongate and heighten this rear elevation. The wall ovens and fridge are positioned on the return wall of the kitchen enabling a calm considered view on entrance and from the lounge. The full length cupboards house Blum space towers for ample accessible storage. The left hand side of the kitchen is designed with the mornings in mind. Bench seating is designed at the end of the island to capitalise on the morning sun and the 'on bench' pantry houses the toaster and everyday appliances which once closed hide the mess of day to day life. The width of the island allows for storage on the reverse side, housing items for the dining table amongst other things. The island bench and splash-back are Dekton by Constentino, offering a beautiful focal point for the kitchen and splash-back whilst being hardwearing and easy to clean. The base tone is warm and the colours sympathetic to the interior.

INTERIOR FINISHES / LIGHTING

The interior of the home needed to tone with the exterior for a cohesive flow. An American Oak engineered flooring was selected from Forte, in a blonde oak with a warm pinky grey undertone. Walls were painted in a complementary neutral paint tone which feels enveloping and soft. The carpet is Bremworth 100% wool loop pile in a light warm tone, with an accent of a mid-grey which added practicality to the colour. The curtains are a double weave linen which offer beautiful texture and drape, the colour on the reverse side is slightly darker offering depth and movement. The primary lighting through the house is NZ made by Switch lighting. We worked alongside AB electrical on the lighting plan, creating different moods and moments throughout the various spaces. The hand blown glass pendants are made by Soktas in Australia. They offer a sculptural organic element to soften the lineal details.

BATHROOM / EN-SUITE

The bathrooms were to feel understated but luxurious. Bespoke custom vanities were made in American Oak and stained to match the home's timber flooring. The design of these is clean and minimal, with the rail edging echoing the profile of the battened island from the kitchen. Tapware is in brushed nickle for a soft aesthetic.
