The Kotuitui Whitinga Footbridge in Whangārei is an important link in the Hātea Loop walkway. When Moth Light was brought in by the electrical contractor McKay on behalf of Whangārei District Council, they worked to replace an aging 230 V handrail system with a modern, code-compliant solution. Offspring Profiles supplied the Slim Jim 10 profile, which was expertly recessed into the rebate of the existing stainless-steel handrail. To meet lighting code requirements and reduce energy use, we engineered the system using our Spec Series Slim LED strip, running at 3 W per meter, delivering 320 lm/m at a warm 3000 K. Despite challenges with driver placement and voltage drop, the end result is an elegant, resilient handrail lighting layout that improves safety and enhances the footbridge’s form. This upgrade also aligns with the project’s functional and aesthetic goals — it’s clean, efficient, and integrated without detracting from the bridge’s architectural character.
