The Metro Tunnel transforms the way people move around Melbourne, improving north-south transit as well as access to key destinations and landmarks.
The biggest-ever public transport infrastructure project in the state of Victoria’s history involved building twin nine-kilometre tunnels and five new underground stations: Arden at North Melbourne (near Arden Street), Parkville, State Library (at the northern end of Swanston Street), Town Hall (at the southern end of Swanston Street) and Anzac at the intersection of Domain Road and St Kilda Road.
The Metro Tunnel creates a new end-to-end rail line linking Sunbury in the west to Cranbourne and Pakenham in the south-east. More trains now run more often across Melbourne with three of the busiest train lines routed through new tunnels under the city.
The whole scheme connects into the city environment and ensures seamless passenger flow. By untangling the City Loop rail tunnel, the Metro Tunnel enables over half a million more passengers to travel across the rail network in peak periods every week.
Getting to and from work and study, connecting with friends and family, and going to sporting, cultural and community activities is all easier and more enjoyable via Metro Tunnel.
