Platform House

The concept of the ‘platform’ emerged from the desire to rise above the enclosing volcanic cone and surrounding trees. The expansive living areas are placed on the upper floor, with sliding windows and doors offering views through the tree canopy to the suburban vistas beyond. A northern deck, suspended on steel legs, extends from the living space and is supported by a broad roof canopy. The timber platform is split in two, with a stone and glass cross-axis element inserted between the halves. A pair of mono-pitched roofs rises to the north, optimizing solar access to the central plan. This central insertion serves as a hub, connecting the four zones of the house. The upper living level opens to an outdoor room, a primary entertainment space with filtered light and solar access on three sides. Timber slats control sunlight, while gas-strutted shutters, glazed louvres, and sliding sashes provide ventilation. In winter, a wood-burning stove creates a cozy dining area. Sustainable design features include a suspended concrete slab for thermal mass, high insulation, operable louvres for sun control and privacy, renewable timbers, and a rain garden to manage water runoff. The rough-hewn local stone complements the warm cedar panelling, creating a harmonious, eco-conscious home.
