This modern family bach on the beachfront overlooking the white sand at Rangiputa beach in Northland provides shared family living spaces in a compact building footprint. An existing small concrete block garage on the site was retained as the foundation for this build and transformed into a self-contained unit. The addition of a multi-purpose garage space on the ground floor and a new first floor above containing bedrooms, bathroom and main living-dining area completes the project.

The orientation of the building towards the beach required an innovative split plane roof design with clerestory windows that draw Northern sun into the upper level living spaces. Two deck areas allow occupants options for sheltered outdoor entertaining spaces in all weather conditions and connect directly to central living spaces. The combination of painted weatherboard, stained cedar battens and raw concrete block creates a dynamic façade with sections of the house pushing out from the main bulk and allowing framed views through bespoke windows.
