By Light & Lines
Locked away for more than 100 years, the mill is now a thriving mixed-use ‘village’ with homes, shops, cafés, parks, plazas, laneways and links to new light rail – a model for urban regeneration. It’s a place with heritage at its core, where more than 30 percent of the floorspace is in buildings we retained.
Among those is the Mungo Scott flour mill, an inner west landmark since 1922 that’s been revived with a new public plaza and outdoor amphitheatre for community events.
By retaining and reusing many of the existing buildings – including the mill’s towering grain silos, now apartments – Flour Mill of Summer Hill shows that with thoughtful planning and ingenuity we can support a city’s growth without sacrificing part of its history.
