7 signs it’s time to replace your garage door

1. Visible damage or structural warping

Dents, cracks, rust or sagging panels are among the most obvious signs a garage door is on its last legs, hurting your home’s curb appeal. One damaged panel is often replaceable, but multiple damaged panels usually point to full replacement

2. Excessive noise or mechanical failure

Excessive noise, like grinding or banging, usually means worn rollers, a tired motor, or mechanical failure; older garage door openers get noisier over time. A door that shudders, won’t stay open or jumps its tracks is a safety concern, so stop using it and call a professional.

3. Repairs are starting to add up

If you’ve had the door fixed a few times and another problem has already appeared, it may be worth looking at replacement instead. Add up what you’ve spent on repairs and compare it with the cost of a new door. At some point, continuing to fix an unreliable door can stop making financial sense, especially when it regularly gets in the way of using your garage.

4. Poor energy efficiency and rising energy bills

Drafts or gaps point to poor insulation, and older garage doors over 10 to 15 years old often lack adequate insulation, leading to increased energy bills. An energy-efficient garage door cuts heating and cooling costs.

5. The opener is showing its age

An older opener isn’t automatically unsafe, but it may be missing features you’d now expect, such as improved auto-reverse protection, rolling-code remotes or battery backup. If the opener has become unreliable or no longer suits how you use the garage, have it checked. In some cases, replacing the opener is all that’s needed rather than replacing the entire door.

6. Corrosion is spreading beyond the surface

A small patch of rust can often be dealt with, but rust around hinges, fixings or other working parts is more concerning. Homes near the coast or in areas with geothermal exposure can see corrosion develop faster. If the affected area is part of the door’s structure or movement, it’s worth having the door inspected before the damage gets worse.

7. It no longer suits how you use the garage

If the space now doubles as a gym or workshop, an old door may not provide adequate insulation or easy access, not just about looks.

Some problems only need a simple fix or service. Others, particularly those involving springs, cables or uncontrolled door movement, should be left to a qualified garage door technician.

Coastal homes deal with salt-driven corrosion, wind-exposed sites need a rigid, correctly sized door for security and durability, and multi-use garages benefit from better insulation and energy efficiency.

What to consider when choosing a replacement garage door

• How you use the garage: parking, storage, gym, or workshop differs.
• Door type and material: steel (including our Timbertec Steel Garage Doors), aluminium composite, or cedar.
• Insulation and weather sealing, for energy efficiency.
• Garage door openers: auto-reversing systems, rolling-code technology, and battery backup.
• Design and curb appeal: colour, profile and façade fit.
• Professional installation, assessed against AS/NZS 4505:2012, the joint Australian/New Zealand standard for garage doors.

Choosing the right replacement is easier once you understand how the main door styles compare. Popular garage doors in New Zealand vary in appearance, material, insulation and practicality, so weighing up those differences can help narrow down the best fit for your home.

What happens during a garage door replacement?

Your installer inspects the door and opening, fits the new door and opener, and tests it so it opens and closes smoothly.
