This Melbourne bakery was transformed into a boutique space with sculptural forms and a layout designed with customers in mind.
Kudo was once a tight corridor used for storage in the heritage wing of The Hotel Windsor in Melbourne.
"Canelé-inspired furniture sits on the ground plane, guiding people around the narrow space. The pieces create organic traffic movement, similar to a sculptural garden."
The sculptural form of the timber allows the existing services to be hidden.
Kei describes the timber as a "skin to decorate the heritage structure without modifying it".
Originally an old storeroom, Kudo is a narrow yet functional hospitality space.
The natural materiality of the space allows the baked products to be the focal point.
Timber frames create additional storage and room for displaying the products.
Visitors can sit at the front of the space to enjoy their coffee and baked goods.
Copper canelé moulds suspended from the ceiling add character.
"One of the best design features is the use of the rear of the bakery, which looks into a laneway. Large panels of glass have been added to the heritage facade, showcasing the flour milling and mixing process. This window glows before dawn while Melbourne awakens to the sunrise," shares Felix Goodwin and Elena Nguyen.
