Bespoke flooring is a sophisticated way to create a dynamic point of difference in commercial interiors - and customised carpet is one of the most coveted ways to do so. From intensely patterned to pared back, we heard from Belgotex about how to design carpet to set a space apart.
The world of carpet is a dynamic one, with the material and functional aspects of this traditional flooring material moving ahead in leaps and bounds.
Combining bespoke design with the vast possibilities of material and function, carpet is a truly versatile, and often cost effective way to dress a floor, particularly in commercial spaces where high foot traffic is expected.
“Businesses are using carpet to create unique brand identities,” Belgotex’s Kylie Gibbs says. “The right carpet can define a company’s look and feel, and can set a space apart, creating distinctive and sought after entertainment or conference venues.
“The impact carpet has on a room is often underestimated,” Kylie says. “In fact, more than most other design elements, it can have a significant effect on the aesthetics of a space. The floor is one of the largest areas of any internal space - competing only with wall and ceiling space in terms of volume - and as such it can be a hugely defining feature.
“In most cases, making a choice about what will be the feature of the room - whether it will be the floors, walls or ceiling – is the first step in terms of deciding on carpet design. If the floor is chosen as the feature, the options for bespoke designs are limitless. If another finish is chosen as the main feature, carpets may be selected to complement the concept.”
In New Zealand, Belgotex is the exclusive distributor of Danish-designed carpet brand ege carpets, a range of carpet known around the world for its quality and versatility in terms of bespoke and customisable design options. One of the latest commercial spaces to incorporate ege carpets is the Holiday Inn at Auckland Airport. “They wanted to move away from the traditional hotel look and feel and create a space that felt edgy, playful and unique.”
The result was a bespoke flooring design incorporating six different colours in a dynamic geometric layout reminiscent of the traditional herringbone design of wooden floors. “By selecting a palette of six different colourways, the carpet design was utilised as a central feature of the hotel’s interior spaces, as well as for wayfinding and creating definition between open-plan spaces of the hotel. That meant utilising different colours for areas such as the lobby, the restaurant and the conference rooms, as well as different tones for each level of the building to provide guests an instant familiarity with their floor.”
Using carpet in this way in commercial spaces has been growing in popularity, particularly over the last five years, Kylie says. “We’re finding clients are wanting to use carpet to create a corporate identity. A large part of our service offering is developing original designs that are specific to company and brand.”
Carpet is a flooring choice suitable for a large range of budgets due to its versatility in terms of makeup. “There are various options available ranging from the type of backing specified through to pile weights and the choice of either nylon or wool.
The Belgotex team is made up of a group of design professionals with backgrounds in Architecture and Interior Design. “The Belgotex point of difference is our commitment to quality and bespoke design solutions. We look at every project from a design perspective and focus on creating stunning solutions that enhance any area.”
