Electric BBQ Grills – 3 Important Features to Look For

1. The cooking surface temperature

A common misconception about electric BBQs is that they can’t reach the same high heat as a gas BBQ. While it might be true for some cheaper imported models, a well-designed electric barbecue can easily match, or even outperform, gas when it comes to temperature and heat retention.

For example, the UltraDine electric grill, made in Germany and equipped with state-of-the-art heating elements, can reach up to 230°C directly on the cooking plate. That’s the same temperature as the hottest part of a gas flame. The difference is that the heating element of a quality electric unit transfers heat straight to the cooking surface, giving you consistent, controllable results every time you cook.

When grilling steak, chicken, or seafood, that high temperature is essential for perfect rich, caramelised flavour. The non-stick coating and even temperature distribution also mean less oil is needed, making your food a little healthier without sacrificing taste.

It’s worth noting that because the heat is applied beneath the cooking plate, electric barbecues often heat faster and use less energy overall than their gas or charcoal counterparts. They’re an eco-friendly option for anyone looking to cook outdoors year-round without the hassle of gas bottles or open flames.

2. Consistent heat across the cooking area

One of the most frustrating experiences for any grill lover is dealing with hot and cold spots. You place your food perfectly, only to find that half of your sausages are overcooked and the other half barely seared.

That’s where the design of the heating element and cooking surface becomes critical. The UltraDine’s specifically engineered electric heating element ensures even heat distribution across the entire cooking area. Its teppanyaki-style layout features three distinct temperature zones:

• Central cooking area: The hottest zone for searing steaks or achieving that golden crust on chicken.
• Warming area: Surrounding the centre is a lower-heat ring running at about 50% of the cooking temperature. Perfect for keeping food warm while you finish other dishes.
• Cool zone: Around the edges, the grill plate remains cool to protect your benchtop or outdoor surface from excess heat transfer.

This thoughtful design offers excellent temperature control and flexibility while cooking. You can preheat, sear, and rest your food all on one electric grill, which is why many home chefs now consider an outdoor teppanyaki kitchen to be a great choice over gas or charcoal alternatives.

3. Type and quality of steel used

When comparing electric barbecues in Australia, one detail that often gets overlooked is the quality of the materials, especially the steel used for the grill plate.

Many BBQ electric grills on the market still use mild steel or cast iron, both of which are prone to rusting, particularly in coastal areas. These materials might hold heat well initially, but they’re not built for the long haul.

Stainless steel, on the other hand, offers excellent heat retention, durability, and corrosion resistance. However, not all stainless steel is created equal.

The Germans have a well-earned reputation for engineering precision, and the UltraDine range is a testament to that. Each grill features premium-grade 304 stainless steel, the industry standard for food-safe, high-performance cooking surfaces.

This means your electric BBQ grill will maintain its sleek look and superior performance for years, even with regular outdoor use near the coast. When you’re investing in your outdoor kitchen, that kind of quality is always worth paying for.

Why choose an electric barbecue?

Beyond the technical features, there are many practical reasons Australians are switching to electric barbecues.

• No gas, no fuss: Forget running out of gas mid-cook or storing heavy bottles. Just plug into a standard outdoor socket and start grilling.
• Safe for balconies and apartments: Many councils and apartment complexes don’t allow open flame cooking. An electric barbecue gives you that outdoor cooking experience without the fire risk.
• Cleaner cooking: With no charcoal or gas residue, you’ll experience fewer flare-ups, less smoke, and easier cleaning. Simply wipe with soapy water or use one of our cleaning kits.
• Temperature precision: Whether you’re cooking at high heat for searing or low for gentle reheating, temperature control is far more accurate than with gas.
• Eco-friendly efficiency: Electric barbecues use electricity efficiently, often resulting in lower operating costs and reduced environmental impact compared to gas or charcoal.

Performance and versatility

When it comes to cooking performance, the UltraDine sets a new benchmark. The even temperature and excellent heat retention mean you can grill everything from steak and chicken to vegetables and seafood with consistent results.

The high-temperature searing function locks in flavour, while the teppanyaki surface lets you cook stir-fries or breakfast foods like eggs and bacon without needing multiple appliances. For those who love year-round cooking, it’s equally at home in outdoor kitchens, balconies, or even indoor setups with proper ventilation.

With its sleek design, green-friendly efficiency, and versatility, it’s easy to see why electric barbecues are becoming a popular addition to Australian homes.

Maintenance and cleaning tips

Proper care will ensure your electric BBQ stays in top condition for years. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, but here are a few tips:

1. Preheat your barbecue before use to ensure consistent heat across the surface.
2. After cooking, turn the temperature down and let the cooking surface cool slightly before cleaning.
3. Wipe away excess grease with a damp cloth or paper towel.
4. Use mild soapy water for regular cleaning — avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the non-stick coating.
5. If your grill features a drip tray, empty and wash it regularly to prevent buildup.
6. Check the grates, lid, and overall design for any residue before your next use.

The benefit of an electric unit is that there’s no ash, coal dust, or soot to deal with — just clean surfaces and effortless maintenance.

Electric vs gas vs charcoal BBQs

Still torn between a gas BBQ, charcoal BBQ, or electric barbecue? Here’s a quick breakdown:

• Gas BBQs: Offer quick heat and the ability to cook large amounts at once, but they can create uneven temperatures and require regular gas refills.
• Charcoal BBQs: Deliver that classic smoky flavour but need more time, patience, and cleanup — not ideal for quick weekday meals.
• Electric Barbecues: Provide convenience, safety, and control. While they may lack the traditional smoke of charcoal, some high-end models simulate that flavour through high-temperature searing and steam effects.

If you’re looking for efficiency, precision, and minimal fuss, an electric BBQ is often the smarter option — especially for outdoor areas where gas or charcoal isn’t practical.
