In this series, we share the style cues homeowners can take from some of Australia’s most beautiful shops, hotels, homes and restaurants. Get ready to be inspired!

This gorgeous farmhouse located in the southern highlands of New South Wales was designed by Martin O’Toole Architects, with interiors designed by the homeowner and styled by BOWERBIRD Interiors. Completed in 2022, the project was a creative outlet for the homeowner with the intention of selling. As such, BOWERBIRD Interiors were brought on to style the home for sale.

“The objective was to create calm and warm spaces with a sophisticated look that would elevate the character of this contemporary gem and attract the right buyer for the property,” says Lauren Lewis, creative director. “To bring the landscape and outdoors in, we opted for natural timbers, textures and earthy tones, which complemented the overall monochrome look and feel.”

Pared-back neutrals and textures were used to highlight the design features of each room and complement the oak flooring. Soft neutral linen sheer window furnishings by DIY Blinds were the final touch, bringing the home to life.

The construction of this gorgeous home has been documented as part of ArchiPro's first My Build Journey feature.

Lessons in design

Apply these decorative techniques to your own home or project to recreate your favourite elements of Herald Park.

Allow the architecture to guide your design

“From the first time I saw the property, I was blown away by the architecture,” says Lauren. “The house spoke for itself, so it became obvious that the architecture of the property and its monochrome aesthetic would guide the inspiration for the interior design and finer details.”

Homeowners can apply this technique to their own projects by ensuring furnishings are informed by the architecture of their homes. BOWERBIRD Interiors did this by furnishing spaces with simple, contemporary and high-end furniture that complemented the similarly styled architecture of the home.

Create a connection between the landscape and interiors

The large-scale glazing in this home celebrates the land on which the property is built by framing viewpoints of the rolling green hills beyond. “With the objective to draw attention to the stunning natural landscape and location, we included earthy tones that connected the landscape to the black architectural details,” says Lauren. Regenerate a connection to nature in your own home by using colours and materials that echo the textures and plants that surround your property.

Create contrast with materiality

BOWERBIRD Interiors used layered materials to create depth and contrast in this project, a styling technique that anyone can recreate. The woven bar stools contrast nicely with the marble details and gold finishes of the kitchen, while the bedrooms feature velvet, wool and linen to create a sense of luxury. “Layering several textures adds extra depth to the space,” says Lauren.
