Many materials and design choices may come to mind when you think about ‘luxury design’, but few have remained as timeless as marble. It’s a material that is central to FUM Australia, a brand dedicated to bringing beautiful marble to Australian spaces – all while focusing on traditional processes and sourcing from a region known for producing some of the world’s finest stone.
“Our roots date back to 1920 in Carrara, Italy, where craftsmanship and tradition have always been at the heart of what we do,” shares FUM Australia’s Deniz Comlekcioglu. “Many of the same extraction and finishing techniques used for over a century remain integral to our process today, ensuring every slab carries the character and quality that define true Italian marble.”
Synonymous with the world’s finest marble, Carrara’s geological makeup produces stone with unparalleled purity, durability, and depth of character. By sourcing directly, FUM maintains full control over quality and authenticity, ensuring that Australian homeowners and designers have access to the same prestigious materials used in iconic global projects such as the World Trade Centre.
“Our long-standing relationships with Italian quarries allow us to hand-select the finest materials, often securing unique and rare selections that aren’t widely available. This elevates the perception of marble beyond a surface material to something truly bespoke and timeless,” says Deniz.
“We don’t just supply marble – we curate it.”
With depth, character and uniqueness, the natural material brings a presence to spaces that can’t be replicated by engineered materials. “It ages gracefully, tells a story, and has been used in the world’s most celebrated architecture for centuries. In an era of mass production, people are drawn to something that feels organic, enduring, and inherently luxurious.”
At FUM, designers and architects can work with the team from concept to execution to receive tailored recommendations based on their project’s desired aesthetic, functionality, and longevity. This support extends from selecting the right slab and advising on finishes, to assisting with custom applications. “Our role is to make sure the material enhances and complements the overall design,” says Deniz.
“For homeowners, the journey can be overwhelming, so we simplify it. We guide them through the selection process, explaining the characteristics of different marbles, the nuances of maintenance, and what will work best in their space. Whether it’s a statement kitchen, a sculptural fireplace, or a full-scale architectural application, we ensure they feel confident in their choice.”
At the moment, a strong movement towards dramatic veining and bold patterns is being seen across the country, with designers and clients gravitating towards statement pieces. There’s also an increased interest in honed and textured finishes, as well as the use of marble beyond benchtops – think feature walls, integrated basins, and even furniture. Externally, the material is making a resurgence in cladding and landscape designing, bringing a sense of permanence and sophistication.
“Understand the function of the space first,” says Deniz. “Some marbles are better suited to high-traffic areas, while others shine in statement pieces. Consider movement, veining, and tone in relation to the broader design, and always select in person when possible – marble is natural, so every piece is unique.”
Middle Park home
This home in Victoria has embraced natural stone, with FUM Australia’s Breccia Capraia, Calacatta Extra, Calacatta Oro Grigio, Navona Travertine, and Silver Travertine Original all used in the project – both inside and outside.
FUM Australia’s Fior di Bosco marble steals the show in this Mornington Peninsula home. With its dramatic veining and warm grey hues, it pairs perfectly with sleek textures and minimalist details for a refined organic feel.
As well as making a statement with its dramatic veining contrast, the Ice Blue marble in this Elwood residence demonstrates the design possibilities of marble with its curved waterfall island bench.
Ice Blue marble from FUM is also showcased in this luxury Airlie Beach project. Curved detailing features in the kitchen, with the stone used throughout the property, including the walk-in wine cellar and bathrooms.
“Marble isn’t just a material – it’s an investment in craftsmanship, history, and longevity. Our goal is to make sure every piece we supply becomes a defining element in the spaces it inhabits, bringing a touch of Italian excellence to Australian design.”
