Founder of Wolf Construction, James Thomas, is passionate about transforming old or neglected properties into stylish, beautifully restored homes.

James Thomas, founder of Wolf Construction, is drawn to the potential hidden beneath the crumbling brick, paint-peeled weatherboard, and forgotten character of homes that are, in his words, “run down and left behind”. Providing the opportunity to transform once-neglected properties into beautifully considered, energy-efficient masterpieces, these projects stir a deep excitement within Thomas.

“What Wolf Construction really means for me is that I get to make an impact on people’s lives. The homes we build nourish New Zealand families, through the memories they create in those homes and the quality of life they enjoy,” Thomas explains.

Named for his late Alaskan malamute Juno, Wolf Construction was established by Thomas in mid-2016. Having built a strong team with over 50 years of combined experience, Wolf Construction can provide everything from renovations, new builds, and design-to-completion services, to earthworks, hard landscaping, and quantity surveying.

While they primarily operate in central Auckland and the North Shore, Thomas and the team have been known to travel further afield.

“Our work is fluid,” Thomas says, “We like to maintain our relationships with our clients, and as New Zealanders tend to move about, we go where they go.”

A bungalow restoration in the heart of Grey Lynn

Due to his passion for restoration, Thomas likes to take on heritage villa and bungalow renovation projects. One such project, christened ‘Treetops’ for its view over Grey Lynn’s tree-lined streets, was a labour of love in collaboration with Adele McNab Architects.

The team had to peel back layers of sub-par renovations — a common occurrence on villa and bungalow restorations — to revive elements of the original character and breathe new life into the home.

Thomas and his team masterfully transformed the bungalow in line with McNab and the client’s vision, simplifying the layout and connecting the living spaces to the view from which the project borrows its name.

Alongside the original façade and hardwood flooring, restorative features in the home included a kauri sarking skylight with kauri planks rescued from an older part of the house.

Prioritising trust and transparency

Thomas takes a tailored approach to every build, regardless of size or budget. This means sitting down with the client and their architect at the start of the project and discussing their goals and priorities to ensure everyone is on the same page. To realise the fullest potential of a project, Thomas emphasises the importance of trust and transparency between the builder, client, and architect.

“We’re on the same team, so it’s important that everyone remains engaged and collaborative throughout what can be, at times, a lengthy process.”

With comprehensive planning and open communication, Thomas and his team are able to provide support and resources for their clients throughout the entire project to ensure everything runs smoothly.
