Multifunction taps are redefining kitchen design, combining boiling, chilled, filtered and everyday water in one sleek fixture that saves space, energy and clutter.
In a kitchen, every centimetre of bench space counts. That’s why the latest generation of multifunction taps is proving irresistible to homeowners who want more capability in less space. With a single fixture now able to deliver boiling, chilled, filtered, and standard hot and cold water, the kettle, water filter jug and fridge dispenser are fast becoming obsolete.
According to Tim Meyer from InSinkErator, multifunction taps have “evolved from basic boiling-water dispensers to highly integrated systems that combine boiling, chilled, ambient, and filtered water with standard hot and cold functions in a single, sleek unit.” This shift has been fuelled by changing lifestyles, a demand for uncluttered kitchen design, and advances in compact technology that can deliver precise temperature control while fitting neatly under the bench.
Why one tap is more than enough
For anyone still filling a kettle or relying on a fridge dispenser, an integrated tap system offers a leap forward in both convenience and aesthetics. “One tap replaces a kettle, water filter jug, and chilled water dispenser,” says Tim. And because boiling water (up to 98°C) or chilled water is available instantly, there is no waiting. All the working parts are hidden away, leaving a clean, streamlined benchtop.
The tech behind the tap
Beneath the surface, the NeoTank* is a compact, insulated boiler with a 2.5-litre capacity, delivering boiling water instantly at adjustable temperatures between 89–98°C. The NeoChiller* uses ice-bank cooling technology to chill water to between 3–10°C. Both are paired with a 5-micron water filter that “removes impurities without stripping beneficial minerals, improving taste and odour.”
Safety is built in, with child-safe levers, spring-loaded mechanisms to stop the flow when not pressed, insulated taps to prevent burns, and automatic shut-off valves when replacing filters.
Better water, better taste
The filtration process is straightforward but effective. Water passes through a replaceable 5-micron cartridge before it is heated or chilled. This removes chlorine, lead, particulates and other chemicals that affect taste and odour, while keeping the natural minerals that are good for our health. The result is cleaner, fresher water for cooking and drinking, with the added benefit of reducing potential exposure to contaminants.
A win for the planet and your power bill
While multifunction taps deliver a clear lifestyle upgrade, they also have strong environmental credentials. “They eliminate the need for bottled water,” says Tim, adding that they use less energy than kettles by heating only the water required. The brass and stainless-steel components are designed for longevity, reducing waste from replacements.
For those who use a lot of chilled water, the NeoChiller is also more efficient than a fridge dispenser, as it avoids the repeated door opening that can increase energy use.
What to know before you install
The under-bench units are about toaster-sized but you will need a mains water connection, drainage and a standard 3-pin power socket nearby. Good ventilation under the bench is important, and filters should be changed every 6–12 months depending on water quality and usage.
Choosing the right model comes down to lifestyle. If you want boiling, chilled and standard water in one, the MultiTap Chilled is the go-to, says Tim. For keen entertainers, the HotTap/DualTap offers boiling and chilled water from a dedicated side tap, while the MultiTap delivers boiling and standard hot and cold from a single, streamlined fixture for everyday efficiency.
With finishes in chrome, brushed or black, and a warranty of up to five years, this is a fixture that works as hard as it looks good.
Multifunction kitchen taps are about more than convenience. They help create a kitchen that is efficient, beautiful and ready for anything – from a weekday cuppa to a Saturday night cocktail.
