Door hardware has experienced a revolutionary shift from basic metal options in classic styles to a world of shapes, styles, finishes and colours. Here, we explore the top six trending styles.

As technology continues to transform our homes and workplaces, the demand for innovative door hardware solutions has grown significantly, evolving beyond its traditional functionality, to become an essential element in both the design and security of modern spaces.

Smart technology is one of the most significant trends we’re seeing in door hardware, says Debbie Given from Supreme Lock & Hardware, a New Zealand-owned hardware business from a  leading pioneer family in hardware solutions.

“Over the past few years, we’ve seen a marked shift toward features like keyless entry and remote monitoring, which is becoming standard in both residential and commercial spaces. Enhanced security features, such as biometric locks and integrated home security systems, are also on the rise.”

But not only has technology evolved, the availability of a wider range of styles, finishes and colours has grown exponentially in recent years.

“In terms of styles, minimalistic and streamlined designs have gained popularity, reflecting broader interior design trends,” shares Debbie. “And door hardware colours are shifting towards reflecting that blend of timeless elegance and modern aesthetics.”

Here, Debbie shares the top trends in door hardware for 2025.

1. Aged, antique & brushed metal finishes

Aged bronze and antique copper are set to trend as homeowners and designers increasingly seek vintage-inspired elements in their spaces. These finishes bring depth, adding a sense of history and uniqueness to interiors. Their timeless appeal complements a variety of design styles, from industrial to rustic and eclectic, offering a rich, storied look that enhances the overall atmosphere of a room.

Brushed brass and gold are also gaining popularity, says Debbie, offering a touch of sophistication to interiors.

“Warm metallics like brushed brass and gold will also be in vogue, offering a touch of luxury; these finishes work beautifully in traditional and contemporary settings, adding warmth and character.”

2. The organic look

Organic texture in door hardware trends, where nature-inspired designs are making  a big influence in interior assestics.

This trend embraces the beauty of natural forms, featuring finishes that mimic the subtle variations found in wood, stone, and metal. From hand-forged shapes to softly curved profiles, these handles not only enhance the tactile experience but also create a harmonious connection between spaces.

Ideal for both modern and rustic interiors, organic-textured hardware invites a sense of warmth and authenticity, elevating your home's style while celebrating the beauty of imperfection. Embrace this trend to transform ordinary doors into stunning focal points.”

3. Minimalist designs

A trend towards minimalist hardware designs reflects the growing desire for uncluttered spaces that foster mindfulness and tranquillity, creating environments that feel open and calming. These sleek, understated designs strip away excess, focusing on function and form without unnecessary embellishment.

In line with minimalist shapes, a raft of neutral colours are appearing in door hardware, that subtly embellish these sleek designs.

“Soft, neutral tones like textured white and cream will be popular, emphasising a minimalist aesthetic – these colours create a clean and timeless look that complements various design styles.”

Debbie says raw earthy greens and blues are also making a statement in door hardware, reflecting a growing interest in nature-inspired palettes and biophilic design, as well as graphite/matte grey, which offers a contemporary feel without overwhelming the design.

4. Recycled materials

Sustainability plays an essential role in today’s door hardware design, reflecting the growing demand for eco-conscious solutions. As consumers become more mindful of their environmental footprint, they are seeking products that not only meet high standards of aesthetics and functionality but also align with sustainable practices. This shift is prompting manufacturers to innovate with materials, shares Debbie.

“Options such as recycled metals, sustainable finishes, and non-toxic coatings are becoming more prevalent, allowing clients to make environmentally responsible choices without compromising on style or performance.”

Materials that are non-corrosive and have great longevity are also being sought by consumers, such as stainless steel, brushed brass, and bronze, as well as composite materials that provide lightweight options without sacrificing strength, further enhancing durability.

5. Increased customisation

Customisation is becoming a key aspect of modern door hardware design, as clients seek finishes, styles, and functionalities that reflect their personal tastes and needs. In response, manufacturers are introducing modular systems that offer greater flexibility, allowing for more personalised choices.

“Clients appreciate the ability to select finishes, styles, and functionalities that match their unique tastes and needs, and modular systems allow for a greater range of personal expression.”

6. Evolving security & smart features

Security features in modern door hardware are advancing swiftly, with innovations like biometric recognition, remote access control, and seamless integration with comprehensive security systems becoming more commonplace. These technologies not only strengthen safety but also offer users enhanced control and convenience, often accessible via smartphone apps.

Looking ahead, Debbie says the next big innovation trend in door hardware may revolve around enhanced connectivity and integration with smart home ecosystems.

“We can expect developments in AI-driven security systems that adapt to user behaviour and preferences, as well as increased use of sustainable materials and smart technology that further streamline user experience.”
