Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is a specific type of housing in Australia, designed and built to meet the needs of people with a high level of disability. The purpose of SDA is to provide people with disabilities safe and secure housing – specifically designed to meet their needs and support their independence.

SDA is typically a self-contained unit or apartment, and it can be located within a group home or standalone. These properties are designed with the specific needs of people with disabilities in mind, and they typically include features such as wider doorways and hallways, level access, and a range of other adaptations to make the home more accessible and user-friendly. SDA can be provided in the form of group homes, boarding houses, shared houses, or individual self-contained apartments, and it can be either owned or leased by the government or the private sector.

RUBI Architects has extensive experience with both government bodies and private ownership, within this highly specialised and essential area of accommodation.

SDA is funded by the Australian government through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which provides support to people with disabilities to help them live independently. The NDIS provides funding for SDA to eligible individuals, and it’s intended to support people with high and complex support needs to live in the community. This can include people with physical, cognitive, or sensory impairments, as well as those with complex health conditions or multiple disabilities.

Overall, SDA is an important aspect of the Australian government’s efforts to support people with disabilities and help them live independently. It provides safe and secure housing that is specifically designed to meet the needs of people with high-level disabilities, and it is an important aspect of the NDIS program which helps to support individuals with disabilities to live in the community.

RUBI Architects offer a Design and Development Management process for individuals, developers and service providers.  We break down the complexities of SDA developments within the NDIS framework with clarity and on a case-by-case basis.

At ArchiPro we recognise and acknowledge the existing, original and ancient connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to the lands and waterways across the Australian continent. We pay our respects to the elders past and present. We commit to working together to build a prosperous and inclusive Australia.
