SL Studio is Special Lights' refreshed lighting design service. Built on decades of expertise, it delivers tailored lighting plans that meet design trends, site requirements and client needs.
“Our process begins with a two-hour consultation, during which we gather a clear brief to understand the project vision, aesthetic preferences and budget,” says Amy Harper-Pell, Design Manager at SL Studio.
“Unlike a one-size-fits-all approach, we don’t push a particular product range or supplier agenda—we source from a wide network to ensure the lighting solution aligns with the project’s needs.”
According to Amy, a common mistake in lighting design is over illuminating a space, making it feel flat and uninspiring. “Many assume that lighting should be evenly distributed with no shadow or contrast, but this approach removes all the depth and character,” she says.
Another is relying solely on downlights, creating a harsh, almost clinical effect. “It’s important to layer the lighting with ambient, task, and accent lighting, adding dimension and warmth to the area.”
Amy warns, “Not having your lighting design team be a part of the project through the implementation phase can result in incorrect pendant hang heights or concealed lighting being incorrectly positioned or angled.”
“That’s why we work with our clients from the beginning with our SL Studio team supporting the installation team with site visits, set-out meetings, sample and test kits, and the like.”
Initially engaged for landscape lighting, SL Studio’s role expanded as the Northbridge Residence project evolved, ultimately encompassing the entire property’s lighting design.
“The site itself posed challenges, with its steep waterfront location requiring thoughtful solutions, particularly for pathway and inclinator lighting,” says Amy. “The combination of a partial renovation with the new-build elements also meant working within existing structural limitations.”
Amy notes the high, sloped ceilings added another layer of complexity, requiring strategic placement of fixtures to ensure both functional and atmospheric lighting.
“The property is best viewed from the water rather than the street, which is quite rare,” says Amy. “Given its steep, sloping block, we focused on illuminating the multi-level staircase and rear landscaping to enhance both safety and visual impact.”
The result is a striking, layered lighting design that creates a dramatic presence when seen from the water.
In collaboration with Design King, SL Studio’s approach to this Manly apartment project utilised the same design philosophies, regardless of its smaller scale. “We focused on layering light to enhance functionality and complement the architectural intent,” says Amy.”
“However, this project had a stronger emphasis on feature lighting, adding pendants and wall sconces to create visual interest. While space constraints required precise fixture selection and placement, our goal remained consistent: to create a balanced, well-lit environment.”
There’s a growing trend toward simplified, pared-back feature lighting, with materials that feel more organic and blend into architectural spaces.
When asked about the current trends in lighting design, Amy remarks, “We’re noticing a subtle shift away from LED strip lighting in areas where it doesn’t serve a functional purpose, favouring a more intentional approach to illumination.”
Amy adds, “There’s also a growing trend toward simplified, pared-back feature lighting, with materials that feel more organic and blend into architectural spaces.”
