Learn how to measure and select the perfect wood slab size for your project. Discover standard dimensions and custom options available at Hansen Timber.
Choosing the right size wood slab is essential for ensuring your project turns out exactly as you envisioned. Whether you're creating a custom dining table, a unique desk, or a beautiful bench, understanding how to measure and select the perfect dimensions is key. In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of measuring and choosing the right wood slab size for your project, using examples from our inventory at Hansen Timber.
Standard Measurement Considerations
When measuring a wood slab, there are three main dimensions to consider:
Width: The distance across the slab, typically measured at the widest point.
Thickness: The distance between the top and bottom surfaces of the slab.
Length: The distance from one end of the slab to the other.
It's essential to note that many wood slabs have variable widths, meaning the width may differ at various points along the length of the slab. When measuring, be sure to account for these variations and consider how they may impact your project.

Width ranges: Our slabs typically range from 260mm to 1250mm in width, with many options in between.
Thickness variations: We offer slabs with thicknesses ranging from 50mm to 135mm, allowing you to choose the perfect depth for your project.

Moisture Content and Fillet-Drying Process
When selecting a wood slab, it's crucial to consider the moisture content of the timber. At Hansen Timber, all our slabs undergo a fillet-drying process, which helps to optimise the moisture content and ensure the stability of the wood. This process minimises the risk of warping, cracking, or other issues that can arise from excessive moisture, ensuring your project remains beautiful and structurally sound for years to come.
