What Are Mirror Demisters
In the category of bathroom heaters, a mirror demister is an exceptionally handy little feature that works with any imager's size and shape. Essentially, a mirror demister is a self-adhesive, ultra-thin pad that applies to the back of the bathroom mirror. By warming it gently and gradually, it prevents the reflective surface from accumulating excessive amounts of moisture. As a result, what would normally be a steamy and foggy surface becomes clear and completely mist-free.
Benefits of Bathroom Mirror Demisters
- Although considered a luxury product, mirror demisters are a smart and useful investment. Apart from a long life span and insignificant running costs, they also save a lot of hassle. Finally, a heated bathroom mirror is almost maintenance-free, which implies further saving on cleaning materials and labour.
- The typical lifespan of mirror demister pads is between eight and 15 years. Their operating costs are similar to those of LED lights, making them both economical and environmentally friendly.
- Apart from saving efforts of constantly cleaning the mirror, demisters also spare the time spent waiting for the moisture cloud to disappear.
How Mirror Demisters Work
A demister pad heats up a section of the mirror to prevent the build-up of vapour and condensation. When activated before, during or after a bath or a shower, it keeps the surface continually clean and the mirror streak-free, ready to use.
Some demister pads can be connected with bathroom lights in order to automatically turn on, while other models feature independent controls. A flip of a switch will start the warming process, and it can be turned off as soon as the mirror glass is clean.
Once switched on, the mirror demister pad needs around 15 seconds to deliver. It heats the surface with a temperature between 8-15 degrees higher than the environment temperature, producing a fixed number of Watts per square meter.
Mirror Demister Components
The key element of demister pads is polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resistance wire. It produces an electric circuit that generates the heat, which keeps the mirror surface dry. Sleek pads are typically less than one millimetre thick and need to be placed tightly against the back of the mirror, centred, in order to deliver the best results.
Things to Consider When Buying Mirror Demisters
It's possible to use as many pads as needed. While one pad is sufficient for small to medium mirrors, large reflectors over double vanities and in family bathrooms will need two or more pads to cover their surface area.
The mirror should be compatible with the demister pad. Not all models fit the same. When measuring the right size, it's important to predict and leave a 10mm gap between the edges of the mirror and the demister pad.
After the mirror demister pad is installed, accessories or other materials should not be attached to the mirror surface. Some attachments can disturb the balance and provoke uneven temperatures and stress upon the mirror.
Mirror demisters work best with tempered glass since their operational temperatures might cause other surfaces to crack.
