OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diode and marks the specific kind of screen. It defines a new era of home entertainment TVs and projectors, with technology that doesn't require a backlight, allowing for ultra-thin construction.
The difference between OLED, LCD/LED and QLED TVs lies in the light. LDCs rely on a single backlight that flows through layers, while QLED features a layer of quantum dots. In OLEDs, a thin film emits light covering the entire screen, while every pixel is independent and can be switched off individually.
That system delivers the prime advantage of OLED screens: unit 8k pixels create a deep, exceptionally dark black colour. When lit, they offer high contrasts, an extensive colour palette, and impressive, almost blur-free display quality.
OLED technology is not related to screen resolution or size. While resolution refers to the number of screen lines of pixels, OLED is the way to operate them by light. An OLED TV can be a 4K Ultra High Definition TV, 8K UHD TV, 55-inch OLED TV or 75-inch Oled TV. What all of them have in common is the technology that makes the screen light up.
Some best models on the market offer a combination of 4k OLED TV and HDR technology, with HDR10 and HLG as standard., and support for HDR10 and/or Dolby Vision.

Types of OLED Screens

Passive-Matrix Screens
Passive-matrix screens consist of cathode and anode strips with organic layers between them. Cathode and anode intersections form the pixels where light is emitted, and their brightness is proportional to the amount of applied current. This kind of OLED consumes more power than others, hence being best suited for small screens and portable entertainment units.
Active-Matrix Screens
Active-matrix or AMOLED screens feature an anode layer overlaying a thin film transistor to form a matrix that will light the pixels. Lower power consumption and faster refresh rates than PMOLEDs make them suitable for large displays, such as 4K OLED TVs and even billboards. Top-emitting OLED screens are suited for active-matrix type, with a substrate that can be either reflective or opaque or reflective.
Transparent TVs
Composed solely of transparent components (cathode, anode, and substrate), these displays can be either active- or passive-matrix. They allow light to pass in both directions when turned ON, to become up to 85% transparent when OFF.
Foldable OLEDs
Some substrates are made of very flexible metallic foils or plastics, allowing for the creation of foldable OLED screens. These compounds are durable yet lightweight and durable, ideal for use in cell phones and innovative designs such as "smart" clothes.
White OLED Screens
Rather than fluorescent, OLEDs emit bright, uniform white light to deliver true-colour qualities. This type of OLEDs can be made in large sheets with reduced energy costs.
Things to Consider When Buying OLED TVs
Most OLED TVs on the market are 4K and 8K UHD, but it’s still possible to find full HD TV featuring OLED technology, too.
After picking the size and resolution, the next consideration should be additional features. The TV should be compatible with HDR formats to offer more convenience of use:
- HDR10 is ideal for Blu-ray content
- HLG is recommended for broadcast content
- Dolby Vision improves the streaming content
A Smart-TV platform is determined by personal preferences and virtual assistant integration. A variety of features include Alexa integration and platforms with Android and Apple support.
A Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) feature matches the refresh rate of the display. It's designed for gaming TVs to provide a smoother gaming experience.
A TV should feature at least three HDMI ports, ideally 2.1.
A great visual experience deserves the home audio to match. The speakers integrated into TVs do not always provide the best performance. Wireless soundbars or speaker systems might be a much better solution.
