About Plant Protection products

A garden tells you what it needs protecting from. Frost pools in low-lying yards, summer sun scorches western-facing walls, cabbage moths find the brassicas within a week of planting. Plant protection supplies exist for each of these situations, and choosing well means starting with the specific risk rather than the product. In Australia, where conditions range from humid coastal summers to dry inland winters, the same bed can call for shade cloth in January and frost fabric in July.

Plant Protection

Once the risk is clear, fit and placement decide whether a plant protection cover actually works. Fabric needs to be anchored against wind yet loose enough to accommodate new growth, with edges secured by pins, weights or buried strips rather than tied tightly around stems. Weed mats are laid over cleared, prepared soil, with openings cut wide of the crowns and drip irrigation positioned so water still reaches the root zone beneath. Both types reward a check after severe weather, when fixings loosen and trapped moisture becomes a problem in its own right.

How should a plant protection cover be sized?

Measure the plant's mature spread and the area to be covered, then allow clearance so the material never presses on new growth. Check the maker's ventilation and fixing guidance before fitting.

Can a weed mat be laid around established plants?

Yes. Clear existing weeds first, cut openings clear of the stems and crowns, and confirm water can still penetrate to the root zone. Widen the openings as the plants grow.

When should temporary protection come off?

Remove it once the frost or pest period it was fitted for has passed, and after any strong wind that may have shifted the fixings. Covers left on too long trap heat and moisture.
