LOW PITCH

Monier’s Hacienda concrete tile can be laid down to a minimum pitch of 15 degrees with underlay and terracotta Nouveau tiles can be laid down to a minimum pitch of 20 degrees with underlay which will protect your home from leaking and help achieve the modern look.

Monier's range of composite lightweight has been specifically designed to withstand up to 300kg and retain its strength whilst being 10x lighter than tiles.

Let’s bust a few myths surrounding concrete and terracotta tiles.

Myth #1

Concrete tiles get brittle/weaker with age.

False. Unlike other materials, such as metal, which may rust corrode, warp, flake, peel and dent over time, concrete tiles gradually improve in strength over several decades. This is caused by a hydration reaction between the water and cement.

Myth #2

When concrete tiles absorb water, the increased weight can cause strain on the roof structure.

False. Concrete tiles do absorb a small amount of moisture which subsequently evaporates. House framing is engineered to withstand these changes.

Myth #3

Moss and lichens eat into the tiles over time.

False: Although moss can build up on concrete tiles if left unmaintained, the moss will degrade the surface of the tile but not affect the structural integrity.

Myth #4

Concrete tiles let moisure in when the colour fades.

False: Concrete tiles (like nearly all other roofing products) will fade overtime when subjected to UV light. The exception to this is Terracotta tile where colour is baked into the tile. Colour applied to the surface of the roof tile is purely decorative and when fades will not affect the water proofing properties of the tile.

The Re-roofing installation process

When you choose Monier, we will be with you every step of the way - from selecting the material to suit your needs right through to the installation. To help you prepare, here is a step by step guide on the roof installation process.

1. Install safety rail

Safety is a priority. Before commencing any work Monier guardrail is installed around the perimeter of the roof to meet current New Zealand health and safety guidelines.

2. Remove old tiles

All the old roof tiles and ridge are removed.

3. Inspect roof

The roof timbers are inspected to make sure the battens are sound.
(As a standard offer, we replace battens and underlay.)

4. Install Underlay*

Roofing underlay used by Monier is a breathable, absorbent, bituminous, self-supporting building paper specifically designed for use in domestic homes. It provides a second line of defence against moisture entry, absorbs condensation that forms on the underside of the roof cladding material,
reducing air movement in roof spaces, and provides protection against the entry of dust and dirt.

5. Install new battens**

If required, new battens are installed ready for the new roof tiles to be laid.

6. Load up new tiles

The new roof tiles are sent up to the roof using a conveyer system.

7. Start laying new tiles

Tiles are laid sequentially up the roof from the gutter line and fixing clips, or nails, are used to secure the roof tiles to the roof.

8. Pointing

Pointing is a flexible material that covers the mortar and comes in a colour that matches the roof tile. It acts as a mechanical fastener, keeping the ridge in place. It is also used to finish the tiles at the gable or edge of the roof.

9. Finish

Guard-rail is removed and the site is tidied and any left-over roof tiles removed.

WHAT DETERMINES THE COST OF MY ROOF?

There are a few factors that will determine the cost of having a new roof installed.

• What roofing material is being used
• The size of the roof
• Underlay
• The pitch of the roof (it’s steepness)
• Any special requirements

Together these five things will determine the cost and the time it takes to get the job done.

Some helpful tips to help you enhance the longevity of your tiled roof

RESPRAYING YOUR ROOF

Exposure to UV, pollution and other environmental factors can take their toll. If you have a concrete tile or metal roof, it will gradually dull with time. This should be expected, but is also easily fixed with respraying.

It’s worth mentioning that terracotta tiles never fade and always retain their colour. This is because the colour is a natural attribute of the material.

EFFLORESCENCE – WAIT, WHAT’S THAT?

Occasionally, natural salts within concrete roof tiles can migrate to the surface to form a whitish-greyish discolouration. It’s called efflorescence and it’s just a temporary cosmetic thing. You will find that it should disappear on its own over time.

Moisture means moss

Moss and lichen spores are everywhere in the air and they can settle and grow on most roofing materials. Moss and lichen grow only where there is sufficient build-up of moisture and dirt particles to support them. Removing the growth is easy. A quick turn with a low-pressure hose or a chemical solution will be enough to remove unwanted growth.

Check your gutters, downpipes and valleys

Uncleared gutters, downpipes and valleys are a common cause of roof leaks. You should give them an inspection regularly – at least once a year.

Painted roofs need repainting

If you choose to have your concrete roof painted you will need to respray it again every so often to retain that fresh-coat lustre.

There is a common misconception that respraying will improve the waterseal of a roof. (It won’t.) It just makes the roof look nicer.

It may make a lot more economical sense to consider retiling your roof with terracotta, where you will never need to respray your roof.

What to do about moisture ingress or broken tiles

If your roof or tiles need repair, it is always best to employ a qualified roofing professional to undertake the work. Walking on roofs can be dangerous and cause additional damage to your tiles.
